Local species

These plants are aggressive living things that have no idea what is going on, and they'll defend themselves, violently if necessary... - Loyalist Operations Officer, Mission brief, hours before planetfall.

Memoirs of a Carnivorous Plant

"I haven't eaten for days, taking up refuge in this metal box has me famished but keeps me covered from this blistering heat.

The white, hot sun beating down onto the red, dry sands, 18 hours a day. I am glad to be in shelter.

Lots of commotion outside, they all seem to be trying to get into this metal box!?

A bipedal, bulky, metal creature is trying to open the hatch on top of the metal box, time to satiate my hunger.

I see a crack of light appear around the hatch, I strike! Pushing my bulk upwards and knocking the hatch off its hinges into the creature's head, smashing off the shell around it.

I look into its eyes, this large, bipedal, thing...human?

Do you know the best part of killing prey? The look on its face. It's that look. Not when it's threatened. Not when you hurt it. Not even when they see you.

It's when they feel the thorns go in. That's it. Surprise. They just can't believe it's really happening to them.

This bipedal thing had that look, this human-thing, when it knew I was not just some variety of local fauna... It will dissolve in my digestive acids, shell and all..."

History

Pre Imperium

Little is known Of Hyperborea Prime's ancient history other than it was the capital planet of a long extinct advanced human civilisation.

Re-Discovery

During the long and somewhat dragged out negotiations with the Baylonian Conclave in the Oteal System, a splinter force from the 597th expedition fleet was sent to explore the small Adlayd sytem. Upon initial scans the planet Hyperborea Prime was believed to contain both plentiful natural resources and what seemed to be ruins of a past civilisation. Before units could be deployed to the surface the splinter fleet was recalled to the Oteal system in preparation for the oncoming war following the Vilnor incident.

Mechanicum forces sent to the Oteal system from Terra to take over the compliance action soon negotiated peace and discovered that in ages past the Conclave had built a research station in the Wootoona Chain. They also discovered that from this station the Conclave had sent landing parties to Hyperborea Prime and found that the long dead civilisation had once been of a high level of technological advancement. For unknown reasons the Conclave had retreated from the system before any Archeotech or STC fragments could be discovered and now they treated the system as if it were cursed.

With the intention of recovering any lost technological secrets the Mechanicum fleet set off for the Hyperborea, however the system was ravaged by warp storms of unprecedented size and was impossible to travel to and was lost and forgotten.

Horus Heresy

Now as the civil war rages, rumours are spreading throughout the Centrumeh Sub-System that the warp storms have dissipated and that the lost technological wonders of Hyperborea Prime are up for the taking. The Synod of the neighbouring Oteal system have also offered a reward for any lost STC Fragments or Archeotech that is retrieved, causing a small influx of civilians from Centrumeh Gate and other surrounding systems wanting to strike it rich or find the archeotech or ancient artefacts for themselves.

This could all be a ploy by the Synod or one of the other systems governors in an attempt to create interest and draw the war into the distant and uninhabited system.

Upon seeing civilians risking the dangerous voyage to Hyperborea and the reward offered by the Synod, Traitor and Loyalist legions have both sent forces to take the Adlayd system and control its resources and any lost technology that could aid in the ongoing civil war and to stop it from ending up in the wrong hands.

The Battle For Hyperborea

Honour Badge

Full battle summary

The Initial campaign in what later became known as “The battle for Hyperborea” was a long and brutal war that drew in many legions from nearby sectors. The battle to seize a foothold on the planet ended in a minor Traitor victory, however where the true victory was won was the vital Archeotech captured by the Traitor forces of the Thousand sons. This archeotech was decided to be of importance, but not of such grandeur that it could sway the outcome of the ongoing civil war. Because of this both loyalist and traitor factions decided to send reinforcements originally destined to The Adlayd System to other theatres of the war deemed more vital.

Hearing that the initial battle had all but ceased, many more civilian, private military, knight houses and even criminal organisations decided that Hyperborea could be the place try to strike it rich. Whether they enlisted their military services for money, tried to find or steal any remaining archeotech or simply wanted to disappear, people flocked to Hyperborea in their thousands. Ramshackle villages or outposts were set up around the shattered remains of the ancient city.

Remnants War

Full battle summary

The Battle for Hyperborea broke down into smaller skirmishes and raids, becoming a war of attrition with no clear superior force. After a long drawn out series of attacks the battle seemed to be going in favour of the loyalists, however at the eleventh hour a strike force from the Alpha Legion, who were believed to be loyalist, stole vital information and showed their true colours, switching to the the traitors side and handing them all the ground and resources they had captured, this swayed the battle and resulted in a minor victory for the Traitors.

Ancient Power Unleashed

Scholars from the Thousand Sons, who had been studying the Archeotech that was horded from the initial battle, uncovered the location of several Relics on both Hyperborea Prime and Secondus. Using the ongoing skirmishes as cover a small strike force of Sons of Horus attempted to capture one of the relics, but it was lost to Custodes, unbeknownst to its powers.

Unhappy with this loss, the Thousand Sons managed to capture a second relic from Loyalist hands and activated it. It was soon discovered that this relic was created in ages past and was used to absorb warp energy, converting it into a power source for the planets long lost civilisation. Once activated, many of the decrepit installations and defence systems began to reawaken from their centuries long slumber, however it also resulted in a build up of warp energy and due to the the ancient, worn out infrastructure mutations and other, darker, goings on began to become more frequent in the months after the battle.

With this discovery commanders from both sides of the civil war have realised the significance of taking and holding Hyperborea and the entire Adlayd System and reinforcements have been dispatched to both Hyperborea Prime and Hyperborea Secundus.
