History

The humans of Kyshtym had survived the horrors of Old Night, but only barely - the world had possessed a rich xenos biosphere when initially settled, but with the coming of the warpstorms waves of mutation had swept over the many continents, and new strains of disease and vermin had overwhelmed many of the ecosystems, and destroyed anything resembling organised agriculture. Worse, the starving population soon turned on each other, and by the time a fleet of the Legio XIV found the system, the inhabitants were brutal, cannibalistic, and ideal cannon fodder.

The Legio soon decided to round up the entire population - by this point less than a quarter-million - and earmarked the planet for exterminatus and terraforming. To the feral warriors, the Death Guard were as gods - striding across the polluted, pestilent landscape, completely immune to poisons and diseases that would lay even the strongest Kyshtym warrior on the ground, and the clans devoted themselves utterly to their new role as Auxilia in the Crusade. The devotion in enforced by a widespread belief among the 'Volunteers' that should they prove themselves worthy, they will be elevated to the ranks of the Death Guard. This is, of course, a lie - the flesh of the Kyshtym warriors is hopelessly riddled with retroviruses and xenoprions, and none would survive the process of induction into the Legion, even if any survived the kind of battlefield the Crusade threw them into.
