History

The 7th Cohort of the Solar Auxilia was one of the original 10 cohorts formed when Saturn originally pledged its allegiance to the burgeoning imperium at the beginning of the great crusade.

Created by divvying up the naval assets of the Saturnine Ordo that had held void dominance in the Sol system for millenia they formed solar pattern cohorts powerful enough to be considered almost expeditionary fleets in their on right. Thanks to the favorable terms negotiated between the Saturnine Enclaves and the Emperor the Lord High Admirals given direct command of each of the initial 10 cohorts of the Solar Auxilia enjoyed many powers and privileges in the Imperium normally reserved for planetary governors or lords militant. This over the course of the great crusade allowed the 7th to accumulate wealth and prestige unheard of even among the elite ranks of the Solar Auxilia and thanks to the ship yards of Saturn, one of the most powerful navies in the imperial army.

In the early stages of the great crusade the list of glories and compliance achieved by the 7th in concert with the imperial army and alongside both the XVII and the I legions earned this cohort much acclaim especially among the Saturnine Enclaves renowned for both their steadfast bravery and an incredible strategic acumen. This lead to this cohort often being given the best pick of ships and men when the returned to resupply earning the the nickname "The Pride of Saturn."

In the closing stages of the great crusade now under the command of Lord High Admiral William Spencer III the military record of the 7th Cohort remains impeccable forming the commanding portion of the 322nd expeditionary fleet. There has however been a noted change in the tactics of the 7th since the new Lord High Admiral took command with less of a focus on combined operations with the the attached imperial army and legion fleets. In certain circles it is whispered now that the 7th allows the imperial army and legion contingents to do most of the heavy lifting only spending the 7th on softened targets or those that will win the most acclaim. Or far more often the 322nd expeditionary fleet would achieve compliance from orbit thanks to the supreme power of the Saturnine fleet.

This has earned them the whispered nickname of the Black Ram's particularly amongst the Imperial militia which could be either due to the unique armor of the Lord High Admiral and his command staff or because being assigned to the 322nd as a militia unit is tantamount to a death sentence. Thanks to the Lord High Admirals particular fondness for remembrancers ensuring that only the accounts that paint himself and the 7th in the greatest light make it back to Sol this nickname is only prevalent at the edges of Imperial space and to Sol the they firmly still "The Pride of Saturn."

The only time the 7th will commit in force is when there are rumors of relics, powerful pieces of technology or vast riches to be found at the surface. The Lord High Admiral often takes a personal interest in these campaigns and will often join the field with his men showing a level of clinical tactical genius said to rival that of even the mighty Fulgrim primarch of the Emperors Children.

At the dawn of the age of darkness the loyalties of the 7th cohort are murky as they have not committed to either side instead seeming to skirt the edges of conflict and seemingly picking its conquests based upon its own gain. It will be interesting to see which side of history it ends up on.

Composition

The 7th Cohort of the Solar Auxilia is one of the most numerous cohorts in existence at the close of the great crusade. Due to nature of its deployments it has seen low rates of attrition amongst its troops coupled with the vast resources available to the 7th they are able to field a vastly higher proportion of elite Veletaris troops then most solar auxilia cohorts.

On the rare occasion that the Lord High Admiral does decide lead a sortie planet side he is almost always accompanied by his household retinue which is chosen from aspiring junior officers in the cohort. Armed with ceremonial power axes crafted in the forges of Mars itself this unit consists of the strongest, most skilled and most ambitious men the 7th can produce. Though he makes much of the "honour" of being selected to join his retinue the appalling mortality rate of its members makes the the actual honour inherent in the position quite dubious.

At the close of the great crusade the 322nd expedition fleet were not accompanied by any adeptus astartes legions preferring to requisition imperial army/militia units as they progressed to bolster their forces.

Notable Characters

Lord High Admiral William Spencer III

The Lord High Admiral wasn't simply given that title, he joined the seventh as a junior commissioned officer. He was the 3rd Son of one of Saturn's oldest but poorest noble families and he obsessed over his inability to live the lifestyle of the other officers on only his officers wage.

Hungry for glory and more importantly a way to fund a particular lifestyle he wanted to lead he took to the great crusade with abandon. Ever keen to claim the lions share of the glory the young lord high admiral would favor close combat assaults on high value targets often to the detriment of his squad and particularly rivals and superiors.

This coupled with his habit of courting the fleets remembrancers made sure that Saturn always knew of his accomplishments and with the surprisingly high rate of attrition his commanding officers saw a minor noble with little to no prospects in the Saturnine Ordo ascend meteorically through the ranks and eventually attain the highest possible rank of Lord High Admiral and absolute command the the Saturnine 7th.

As a member of the original Saturnine 10 the 7th is one of the most powerful and most wealthy of the Solar Auxilia. This wealth and ready access to all manner of relics and technology found in the never ending expansion of the great crusade have given the Lord High Admiral an incredibly long life span and a constitution that has seen him on many occasions survive wounds that would have even ended the life of an astartes.

Admiral Derek Smith

Second in command to the Lord High Admiral he was born to an upstart noble family in one of the many floating enclaves surrounding the 52 moons. Born in the void he showed an aptitude for void combat from a vary early age and an almost uncanny ability to process large amounts of data and solve problems quicker and more decisively than everyone else in his officers intake. An idealist he had a strong belief in the imperial truth and mans place as the rightful rulers of the galaxy. He couldnt wait to make it to the forefront of humanities great crusade and was given his first posting on the 322nd expeditionary fleet.

Moving quickly through the ranks he became the youngest ever appointment to the admiralty board in the fleet, which normally would have put him right on the front line in the Lord High Admirals household retinue. However his ability to parse and translate data gave him the uncanny ability to track reports of relics and ancient technology which made him the lord high admirals prized possession.

Enginseer Dravic

Enginseer Dravic was assigned too the 7th from mars itself too maintain an honour guard of legio cybernetica gifted to the Lord High Admiral in exchange for unspecified technologies that discreetly make their way too certain representatives of the machine cult on Mars.

With a particular interest in certain fields of study deemed unsavory by his peers he often closely accompanies the Lord High Admiral to advise him on new and rare aquisitions and in exhange is given leeway to continue his experiments unmolested with the full support and resources of the 7th at his disposal.
