Age of Strife

Elysia, a verdant world on the outer region of Segmentum Solar, home to the 1st Elysian Regiment (1 ESAR), 89th Solar Auxilia Cohort. During the Age of Strife, Elysia had managed to maintain contact with nearby colonized star systems. Harnessing established trade routes in the sector using primitive space travel technology. However, the Elysia system was characterized by numerous asteroid fields and dense gas clouds that were notorious havens for human and xenos pirates. These small raiding fleets needed to constantly be kept in check to prevent the collapse of trade and communication in the sector. A planetary defense force was established to serve the dual role of defending Elysia, and the systematic destruction of any pirate activity along the vital trade routes.

Due to the necessity to keep the trade routes open, Elysian soldiers had to serve with the planetary defense force for three years. After which time, candidates were selected and rigorously trained in airborne assault, sub-orbital insertion and ship-to-ship boarding actions. Elysian soldiers had perfected the art of rapid strikes in concert with fleet and orbital support to effectively combat elusive enemies. Resulting in stability along the trade routes, as Elysia prospered from the exponential growth of its economy.

The end of the 30th Millennia saw the coming of the Great Crusade to the planet Elysia. Unlike other systems Elysia never witnessed the grand crusade fleet, rather Imperial Rogue Traders brokered an agreement with the planetary rulers for frailty and service to the Imperium of Man. In return for their service Elysia would receive advanced space vessels, greatly increased trading range and Imperial fleet protection for existing trade routes. The Corps Legisticae calculated the initial tithe of 96 Auxilia Regiments from Elysia to serve in Expeditionary Fleets throughout the galaxy. The Excerrus Imperialis were eager to harness the Elysian military skills, grav-chute insertion tactics and equipment for the Great Crusade. Re-mustering senior command elements and veterans from Elysia's existing planetary defence force battalions into 5 specialist Imperialis Auxilia Regiments, to serve with the elite Solar Auxilia Cohorts on Expeditionary Fleets immediately. 1st Elysian Solar Auxilia Regiment (1 ESAR), were formed into the 89th Solar Auxilia Cohort (89 SAC), to serve in the 73rd Expeditionary Fleet.

Great Crusade

Destruction of WAAAGH Mashogg (ca. Mid 800's.M30)

The first Imperial Compliance campaign for the men of 1 ESAR against the Ork empire of WAAAGH! Mashogg, would see them gain honours for 89 SAC, amongst the Excerrus Imperialis.

The 73rd Expeditionary Fleet led by Primarch Leman Russ, elements of Legion Astartes V White Scars, VI Space Wolves (38,000 Legionaries), with a large contingent of Excerrus Imperialis (17,000,000 soldiers) and elements of Legio Ignatum. Tasked with removing the Ork empire of WAAAGH! Mashogg, which had established itself from Follax IV and its neighbouring systems in the Ultima Segemntum. The compliance campaign had pushed the now vast xenos empire back to the Follax IV system. The Legion Astartes had harried WAAAGH! Mashogg since the start of the campaign, utilizing aggressive lightning strike tactics to cripple the Ork forces; before quickly remobilizing to assault the withdrawing WAAAGH! With the Excerrus Imperialis sweeping away the shattered forces that remained in system and re-establishing Imperial Compliance to the freed populations. Casualties amongst the Excerrus Imperialis forces had been high, but not unexpected during the opening months of the campaign. However, as the 73rd Expeditionary Fleet pushed the Ork empire back to its capital system Follax IV the casualties quickly became unsustainable and the campaign ground to a halt. The cunning of the Ork warlords low orbital defence network proving assailable for the current forces. Frustration quickly grew as Leman Russ was unable to breach the series of low orbital defence stations, requested resupply immediately, to stop WAAAGH! Mashogg’s forces from regrouping and replenishing.

Primarchs Jaghatai Khan and Perturabo answered the request for support by their brother. The Khan mobilized his White Scars Legion (53,000 Legioaries), and a substantial force of Excerrus Imperialis (23,000,000 soldiers) to aid the embattled Legion Astartes currently blockading WAAAGH! Mashogg. While Perturabo joined the 73rd Expeditionary Fleet with a small emissary force of IV Legion Astartes, leaning his tactical acumen on how the break through the defences of the besieged Follax IV. A three-phase assault plan was devised by the IV Legion Primarch to breach Mashoggs low orbital defence network, allowing the Legion Astartes and their Primarchs to finally eliminate the xenos empire.

The newly formed Elysian regiments with 89 SAC where dispatched to the Follax IV system, upon the request of Primarch Jaghatai Khan keen to utilize their ship boarding and insertion tactics for the first and third phase of the siege. The Elysian regiments of 1 ESAR, 3 ESAR and 4 ESAR with the bulk of 89 SAC, led the large-scale feint with the Excerrus Imperialis forces into the planets orbital defence stations. 1 ESAR on-board the Hastram Inanis (Carrack class Transport), slipped under the long range bombardment of Follax IV by the Imperialis fleet, to 1 ESAR's targeted low orbital defence station. Carrack class Transports had been chosen by the Elysian regiments of 89 SAC for the assault, due to the vessels rugged design and macro bombardment armaments. The transports smaller size would make it easier to manoeuvre under the gravitational stresses at such a low orbit, long enough for the second phase of the siege. The plan rested on the xenos defenders’ disposition for physical combat with their opponents. The Hastram Inanis pulled within boarding range the defense station and seizing the opportunity the Orks surged out to greet the men of 1 ESAR through the macro fire from the Carrack class Transport. Unbeknown to the Orks as their boarding craft breached the bulkhead of the Imperialis vessel, was that 1 ESAR had set up a series of kill floors, bottlenecks and fire lanes leading deep into the ship for the marauding brutes. Disciplined volleys of lasfire cut down ranks of Orks as they advanced before the Elysian squads would fall-back in a staggered withdrawal through the ship. The fighting was fierce, but the xenos was slowly getting slaughtered in their thousands. The strategy designed to dull the ferocity of the xenos, realizing that they had walked into an inescapable trap when it was too late to retreat. The same tactic had been executed by the other Elysian and Solar Auxilia regiments on dozens of the low orbital defense platforms, creating a ring of assault were the Orks had now overcommitted there forces to the crucible of combat.

The Carinae Disaster (Unknown Date.M30)

The conquest of the Carinae Sodality remains a black mark on the history of the 1 ESAR, a campaign that cost horrific and unnecessary casualties to the Imperialis Auxilia units of the 27th Expeditionary Fleet.

The 27th Expeditionary Fleet arrived in the Carinae System with a coalition task force, consisting of 30,000 Legionaries of the Raven Guard and 85,000 (27,000 Elysian) soldiers of mixed Imperialis Auxilia Regiments. Initially the campaign made swift progress with the conquest of the "Thousand Moons of Carinae" immense void-cities that circled the otherwise planet-less primary. Directed by the keen tactical acumen of the Raven Guard Primarch Corax, the coalition task force exploited Carinae's moons greatest weakness. Rather than assaulting the entire star system at once, Primarch Corax used the mobility of his forces to strike one void-city at a time. After the first month of the campaign the task force had captured 65% of the Carinae System, with the SAEC only suffering light casualties.

The campaign came to a grinding halt on the moon, designated Zenith-312. The Raven Guard, with the combined assault units from the Imperial Army successfully deployed into the void-city. The battle had unfolded as planned; the Elysian company's secured their primary objective and had regrouped to assist units from the Therion Cohort. A large detonation erupted from the depths of the void-city and communication to the combined assault force was lost. The Elysian high command waited anxiously for any information from the unfolding battle, and readied a reserve company for deployment. Communication was re-established when Primarch Corax informed the fleet that Zenith-312 had been captured, however all Imperialis Auxilia units had been destroyed in the conquest. The 1 ESAR lost 25 companies, such an enormous loss of life had a devastating effect on the moral of the soldiers in the regiment.

The Raven Guard abandoned the prosecution of Carinae System, and instead focused all of their resources into locating those responsible for the events on Zenith-312. Without the Primarch direction, the coalition task force command structure broke down with in-fighting between different regiments. Which gave Carinae's defenders time to consolidate their forces, and without the Raven Guard to support, the Imperial Army Regiments suffered badly as they captured the remaining void-cities. The campaign which should have been swift conquest for the 27th Expeditionary Fleet would draw on for another seven solar months and cost a horrific amount of lives as the result for the XIX Legion's fickle need for retribution.

The 1 ESAR retired from the 27th Expeditionary Fleet after the Carinae Solidarity campaign. The regiment suffered 3,385 casualties of the 24,892 Elysian causalities during the conflict; a staggering 92% of its fighting force during the conquest, with most of the deaths accruing in the last five months of the campaign. 1 ESAR swore it would not re-join the Great Crusade under the command of Legion Astartes at such a needlessly high cost of life to its soldiers.
