History

During the great crusade, the 23rd company was just one among many Astartes forces attached to the sprawling expedition fleets reclaiming the galaxy in the name of the Emperor. During this time, it raised notable warriors, proud leaders and won numerous conflicts, however it never climbed to prominence despite this, shadowed by the greater accomplishments of other companies, and eventually fading even more due to the growing defamation given to the legion as a whole by the Imperium.

It was during the last half of the great crusade that the 23rd (and several other companies) found themselves attached to the 72nd expedition fleet alongside a company of Word Bearers. The countless battles fought alongside each other meant more than a few traditions, tactics and ideals were shared between them, most interestingly, it lead to the Iron Warriors eventually taking on some of the more introspective and questioning qualities of the word bearers, most notably, within the 23rd company itself, often seeking consel with the Word Bearers chaplains and the discussions of the true nature of accomplishment and the Emperor’s will. Once the Warmaster Horus declared his intent to defy the emperor, the 23rd were initially polarised, their new ideological approach to the Emperor’s will leading to many different schools of thought as to the true nature of the great crusade, and the Emperor’s reason’s for abandoning it to his son Horus.

With the Word Bearers now long departed from the expedition fleet, the captains began to bicker on what to do, with many of them professing staunch loyalty (or even divinity) of the Emperor. It was the rapid and ruthless action of a consul named “Caedis” that silenced the so called “loyalists” and quickly established a new command within the companies, allied to the warmaster, but more importantly, their primarch, Perturabo.

Those who were on the fence quickly fell into line in the face of Caedis’ rhetoric and undeniable vocalization of their pride as a legion. Within a few days, the expedition fleet had declared its intent and began their new crusade back towards the core ward worlds to unite with their father.

The 23rd company quickly garnered a reputation for being unceasing on the battlefield against the Loyalists and It wasn’t long after the heresy that the company had earned the name, "Adamastos Impetus", a grudgingly respectful title loosely translated from Olypian to mean “Unstoppable force”. Often meeting a foe with extreme shock and awe tactics before the battle had even begun, shattering defense lines with orbital bombardment, taking out strategic locations with unmet and superior fire power and utilising the newly christen Impetus Breachers to push through even the strongest of fortifications, often charging headstrong and (often) triumphantly through enemy lines.

Even the strongest of war-machines would fall to the swift and aggressive initial attacks that the Adamastos Impetus brought to the battlefield, tactics shaped through combined concepts of Iron Warrior tenacity and Word Bearer subtlety. Even when outnumbered, the Impetus Breachers would march undying, unyielding, through the harshest resistance. Whether an overwhelming victory, or a single scout stood, alone on the bloody battlefield at the end of the fight, the cries of "Mors aut Gloria" would be heard... what-ever the cost.

Even now, as the heresy begins to ware on the resources of both sides, their tenacity holds strong and through absorbing smaller loyalist and traitor Iron Warrior forces they encounter (and convert), they have gained a strength not known to them before the heresy. The company and its fleet now approaches the Inferno System, set to arrive amidst the opening acts of campaign taking place for the planet (and eventual Sub-Sector’s) fate. The Emperor's old message would now begin to fall at the hands of the 23rd…

Notable Characters

Pontifex Caedis Caedis admired the ruthlessness of Perturabo in his servitude of the will of the Emperor during the great crusade, and like many of his brothers, considered the achievements of Perturabo and the IV Legion to number among the highest of all the Legions of the Astartes.

Though as the Great Crusade drew on, he chafed at the disdain the Imperium displayed towards the IVth legion’s (and thus his own) methods of accomplishment, much like his primarch. Such was his pragmatic honour and love for Perturabo that any race, individual, or ogranisation that disrespected the primarch would be stopped with force so insurmountable that there would be no repentance, but only penance through death, even if it were the Emperor himself. It is well known that Caedis’ insurmountable pride and eloquence at expressing it was influenced and strengthened during the 23rd company’s numerous battles, alongside the Warrior Priests of the XVII legion.

Naturally, when the emperor renounced the IVth legion, calling their battlefield tactics "barbaric to the point of failure"... it was almost immediately that Caedis began “preaching” that the emperor was not the worthy being that they had all feared until now.

No, it was not the emperor's will that was the unyielding and undying heart of mankind. It was the blood, strength and sacrifice of the Astartes, Perturabo and the Iron Warriors the greatest among them. The false emperor’s will was no longer about spreading the message for which the Astartes had bled and died for, but more about keeping the peace within the Emperor's own courts and his selfish desire for immortality upon the corpses of fallen space marines. The company captain, Caedis, garnered the fear and respect of his men in equal measure by slaying the previous captain, for decrying their primarch’s actions, at the outbreak of the heresy. Mere days after, Caedis’ actions and spiritual reinforcement of the inherent righteousness of Perturabo’s (and the IV legion’s) accomplishments and descision, earned him the honorific “Pontifex” among his company, which quickly became interchangeable with the title “Captain”.

Though the title does indeed have meaning for rank it also carries a further depth, drawing parallels to the guidance represented by the Chaplains of the Word Bearers legion as well, a subtle homage for the brothers that had helped shape the unstoppable leader now in command of the 23rd.

The practice has since been adopted by several other companies to have fought alongside the Adamastos. To ensure the captain of the 23rd maintains a title of distinction in light of that adoption, his men have begun fearfully using the Olypian translation of his name and new rank, translating Pontifex Caedis into “The Angel of Death”.
