Warsmith Fredrick Caustic of the IVth Grand Battalion was born on Terra. A new blood then, he had been a part of the early great crusade, fighting alongside his brothers and occasionally glimpsing the emperor at a distance during pivotal campaigns. Caustic and his brothers rarely saw the influence of direct Imperial leadership. Until they found the Primarch Perturabo. Caustic was hopeful about the prospect of being joined by his named "gene-father" in this crusade; and his hope was thus crushed when the first order of his new "leader" was the scouring of a 10th of the legion.

The IVth Grand Battalion specialized in shock assaults and Fortress Capture. Making heavy use of Contemptors, Robots, and Vindicator Variants the Battalion charges the first breach in a fortress wall, where Contemptors and Robots will engage the defenders while Veteran Tactical Squads establish an internal Base of Operations and clean up stragglers. Once the internal Base has been established specialized "Minotaur" Siege Assault/Cartographer units start to spread out to clear and map the halls of the newly broken "Labyrinth" voxing the positions of defense emplacements, areas of high resistance, and targets of interest, back to the Base of Operations to be logged by a specialized strategist unit.
Caustic continued to fight with the Legion never forgetting the sacrifice of brother Ferrox, until eventually he rose to the position of Warsmith through skill with machines and his own weaponry. Caustic often inspired his brothers to great feats of arms and courage long before being given the spot of Warsmith and none of the soldiers of his new Battalion were surprised at his appointment. (Though some harbored jealousies that would later come to bear.)

Caustic and the 4th Battalion fought several campaign alongside the Primarch after his ascension. His Battalion specialised in shock assaults and close quarters fortress clearing. Vindicators, Contemptor Talons and Castellax automata charge the resisting fortress engaging threats along the way, while artillery barrages batter the wall. Once a breach has been formed, Contemptors and Castellax charge the new entrance and engage defenders while Veteran Tactical squads build and secure an offensive lotion within the walls. After a base of operations has been established within the "Labrynth" specialized Minatour Assault/Cartographer squads start clearing the inside of the fortress and broadcasting the positions of defence emplacements and targets of value for breacer teams to demolish.

It took many years to conquer the Janus system and establish the new Government and Leaders and once this was done Caustic and his battalion needed more supplies an equipment if they were to establish forges for the Cybernetica. This campaign had sealed the IVth Battalion's fate as renegades and Caustic thought finding a station for resupply would be near impossible for the orphans of a traitor legion, however the Dominus had pointed out to Caustic that the nearby Golloch Cluster had a known backwater Imperial Planet known as Paters World that could have easily been overlooked when the news of the Warmaster's betrayal had been spread among the Imperium. Caustic quickly gathered a Detachment of his trusted soldiers and made leave for the Golloch Cluster before anyone could warn them that the IVth Legion had turned traitor and thus deny them they right to resupply.
Caustic's way of war was brutal and systematic and saw many fortresses captired near completely intact. This led to the IVth Grand Battalion being assigned to the "Janus" system as the locals had been calling it. A small system of planets that seemed to all thrive by importing goods from the largest central planet, named Janus. The system was mostly useless strategically, however it held many resources valuable to the production of many form of vehicles and weaponry. Perturabo sent Caustic and his Battalion to the system with a Detachment from the Legio Cybernetica to bring the system to compliance and establish a forgeworld.

This campaign started as any other and was going as expected until Caustic received word of his Primarch turning traitor along with the Warmaster Horus and several of their brothers, and the IVth Grand Battalion was to return to the Legion to prepare for a new campaign. Caustic quickly gathered his Centurions and various Tech Priest and the Arch Dominus of the Cybernetica Detachment to establish a plan. The Magos and his ilk all demanded they remain and continue establishing the Forgeworld, under the argument that no matter what path they decided to take, a new and unknown forgeworld would be a boon to any ally. Many of Caustic's centurions pledged thier allegiance to whatever he decided but others insisted one way or another, loyal or traitor.
+
A week of deliberation and meditation through intensive training passed before Caustic and his allies decided that Janus would no longer be a mission of Compliance, but instead they were here as the planet's new conquerers and leaders. Janus and it's 3 accompanying planets were captured after years of battle and bloody attrition.
+
Once the campaign ended the IVth Grand Battalion's new fate as Renegades was sealed. It would take time to establish the leadership and government and build the forgeworld, but Caustic and his newly dubbed "Iron Born" were sorely in need of supplies and re-arming. Luckily for Caustic their allegiance was not yet known to the wider galaxy and even the news of Primarchs turning traitor was most likely yet to be widespread amongst planets within this sector. The Archmagos Devros told Caustic of a nearby system that contained the known imperial planet

Paters World, and suggested that the planet my not know of Perturabo's new loyalties and that the 4th Battalion may be able to find the supplies they need by presenting themselves as Imperial Legion Astartes to the Paters World leadership. Caustic was hesitant but knew it was their best chance, he gathered a Detachment of his soldier and made his has for Paters Word in the Golloch Cluster.

History

When Perturabo decided to turn Traitor, Caustic and the IVth Battalion were away on a campaign in the Janus system with their Legio Cybernetica allies, and received the news via astropathic communication that the Battalion and it's allies were to return to the legion. After much deliberation and meditation on the subject Warsmith Caustic and the Dominus of his allies came to the conclusion that the most reasonable and logical course of action was to remain in their current system to establish the Forgeworld they were originally assigned here to create.
