History

The 501st Battalion of the 7th Legion was raised very late in the Great crusade, it was created due to the Imperial fists focus on defensive tactics and holding ground but their apparent lack in besieging fortresses and taking ground. Of course as a Legions Astarte they were adept in all forms of war despite their specialty, but a niche siege capability was missing in the legion and as the wars and battles of the crusade ground down to a quagmire of sieges and assaults this was a specialty sorely needed.

So the 501st was raised, taking the 7th legions knowledge of how to defend a fortress into how to besiege and capture one, and to the envy of the Iron warriors legion the 501st was very, very good at its job. This among many other this was just another straw atop the Iron Warriors back, seeing the arch rival legion excel in something that should be an Iron warriors specialty. At the time of the Heresy the 501st was actually on operations with the Iron warriors 6th Grand company. The battalions 4th Siege company was embedded to the Iron warriors 6th Grand company with the task of besiegeing and routing rebel forces help up in the last bastion standing on the Planet designated IV-76. As the Imperial Fists were embedded into the Iron Warriors their chain of command was reliant on the Iron Warriors for information, hence they were not even informed of the betrayal of Horus. The 6th Grand company had watched the 7th legions 4th Siege Company excell time and time again in this bloody war for IV-76 and once the master of their legion had sent word to the 6th Company it was obvious they would turncoat.

The assault on what was now fortress IV-76-B18 (B18 for short), began in the early hours of the early days of the heresy. The Iron Warriors 6th Grand company composed the battle plan, putting it to the Imperial Fists 4th Siege company that they should make the first wave since there succsess elsewhere has been so great. The prideful 7th legion Astarte's ego's swelled at this proposition and the 4th's Commander, attached from the greater 501st itself, Praetor Gadreel Demeter accepted this offer. The 4th began the assault and in their typical fashion methodically and purposefully advanced on their objectives, the mighty and ancient Leviathan Siege Dreadnought Coron Dios Finally layed his Siege drill into the mighty bastions walls and when the Breacher Marines finally caught up, the 4th had breached the walls. Now was the time the 6th Company was meant to advance and push through the rest of the fortress, but alas as the 7th legions Astartes called for help and turned to expect to see their brothers advancing to help them, all they witnessed was there brothers advancing with bolters raised. It was a slaughter, the 4th company lost a 3rd of its men in the opening firefight. Caught between the rebels and the Iron warriors the only way out was into the fortress, fighting two running battles at once the Imperial Fists slaughtered their way through the fortress to put a gab between them and the Iron warriors. Confused and taken completely by surprise the 4th company was in tatters both mentally and physically. It was only due to Praetor Demeter rallying his men were they able to form a defense. After fighting to enter the fortress they now had to defend it against their former brothers.

The 4th company was able to hold out against The Iron warriors 6th Grand company. Showing that while they were created for siege, all Imperial Fists are masters of defensive warfare. The Stern and level headed leadership of Praetor Demeter meant that him and his men were able to hold out long enough until an Imperial fists battlefleet was able to arrive, the Entire 501st Battalion landed on the planet and was easily able to decimate the Iron warriors. Now Gadreel Demeter instead of leading the 1st Company as most Praetors do has chosen the 4th company as his own, after the experiences they shared the bond between Gadreel and his beloved 4th Company is unbreakable.

Now the 501st with the 4th Siege company at its head wage war on their former brothers and will not rest until the treacherous traitors are brought to heel for their betrayal. Especially the now hated Iron Warriors legion, anywhere these hated adversaries can be brought to battle by the 4th company they are.
