Background

Historical Overview

"Say what you like about the Fourteenth Legion. They are mean, ugly bastards but tenacious. There's no one else I'd rather have by my side in a war of attrition, and almost anyone else I'd rather have against me." - Iron Hands Primarch, Ferrus Manus

After the Death Guard's withdrawal from Perditus, following the failed attempt to reclaim the Tuchulcha Engine, First Captain Calas Typhon recognized the need for decisive action in recovering valuable relics that would further the Warmaster's cause. In a bold decision that went against most of the XIVth Legion's standard operating procedures he formed a handful of autonomous "Acquisitorial Task Force" units. Their express purpose was to operate independently, far from the front lines, to gather valuable technologies that could be used to further the ambitions of the Primarch Mortarion and the Warmaster Horus. Failing that, they were tasked with destroying said technologies, rather than allowing them to be employed by Loyalist forces.

These special task forces were typically drawn from multiple Great Companies, though rarely from more than two of them. This led to the task forces being denoted by a four-to-six digit code, which denoted which Great Companies and subsequent Companies the units were drawn from.

ATF task forces often utilized high amounts of elite-infantry units drawn from the veterans of their respective native companies. Frequently given little more than the command of a single frigate or light cruiser, these task forces rarely maintained enough logistical infrastructure to support large-scale warfare, subsequently causing them to specialize in specialized lightning-raid operations. Unsurprisingly, with the Death Guard's emphasis on well-equipped infantry forces, this was widely successful.

ATF 4273

ATF 4273 was comprised of elements drawn from the 4th Great Company's 2nd Company as well as elements from the 7th Great Company's 3rd company. After several disappointing false leads, they finally received solid intelligence detailing a device of unknown origin (but of grand myth and import) hidden on an obscure world in the Golloch cluster. Immediately redeploying to the obscure planet, they soon found themselves in the middle of a fierce battle for Patersworld...
