Founding

“The war-mail shone, hard with hand-forged links… the iron-clad troop was well equipped with weapons.” - Beowulf

The origins of the 131st Company lay soon after the pacification of Luna when the conquest of the Sol System was already underway. At this time of the Imperiums expansion, it was clear that the Astartes Legions needed to be increased in size in order to secure a fast conquest of the system and beyond.

It was decided by the XVIth Legion command that they needed a rapid response company, small in size but intended to plug any gaps in the legions lines during fighting. Unusually, the XVIth Legion chose to recruit the core of this company not from the usual area but from the Anglii culture of the Brythonic Isles in old Europa. Traditionally, this was an area of the recruitment for the XIVth Legion but clearly some negotiations took place in order for the XVIth to recruit here. These close ties with the XIVth would later come back for the 131st Company.

The Anglii culture was a warlike one who had quickly capitulated to the Emperor during the Unification Wars. They prized themselves on creating strong warbands of warriors who were fiercely loyal to their warleaders; indeed their greatest honour was a glorious death in battle protecting the fallen body of their leaders. In battle they were savage fighters who showed no mercy to their foes. A habit of attacking opposing enemy leaders and champions clearly showed the XVIth Legion recruiters that these would be ideal members of the growing legion.

Initially, the 131st Company was small; consisting of four half strength tactical squads, one tactical support squad and one heavy support squad as well as a company command squad. All of these were mounted in Rhino transports in order for the company to respond rapidly to any threats.

First Campaigns and growing development

"They have sown the wind; now let them reap the whirlwind" - "Bomber" Harris, 1942 AD

After the initial training period was complete, Legion Command included a smattering of more veteran troops to form two new tactical squads in order to give some experience and a strong core to form the rest of the company.

To begin with the company did not take part in many actions, being kept in reserve and only deployed when resistance was already broken. This did lead to the 131st acting in an aggressive manner when they were finally released; more aggressive in fact than Legion Command anticipated. In keeping with the Anglii culture, when they were unleashed upon a foe, the 131st were savage and tore the throat from their opponents time and time again adding to the legions growing nomclenture of “Luna Wolves”. The company also began to chafe at so often being kept in reserve and Company Command begin to appeal to the Legion Command to be given a greater role.

As the Imperial forces spread beyond the Sol System it was clear that the Astartes forces needed a quicker, more rapid form of deployment planet-side. The existing Stormbirds, although strong, gave the enemy too long to react; the Astartes needed something faster. It was around this time that the Drop Pod was created.

Legion Command decided to retrain the 131st as an Orbital Assault force using these new vehicles. The smaller squad sizes and small company size meant they were ideal to form a new “Speartip” tactic that the Legion was rapidly developing. Designed to tear out strategic targets such as command centres, power centres, communication nodes and so forth the 131st rapidly took to the new style of warfare.

It was also around this time that some of the tactical squads began to equip themselves with additional close combat weapons. These so-called Despoiler squads prided themselves on throwing themselves at the most dangerous and skilled opponents and casting them down.

With the conquest of the systems around Sol, the Imperium spread and it was with great joy that the Luna Wolves were the first legion to rediscover their Primarch upon Cthonia. With this discovery came a massive expansion of the XVIth, although the 131st did still primarily recruit from the Anglii Enclave on Terra. New Cthonia recruits added another Despoiler squad as well as another heavy support squad as it had been found that the 131st struggled against more armoured targets after the initial Speartip assault.

Fame and fortune

"Let us sit and speak of the death of Kings." -Shakespeare, Richard II

With their Primarch leading the way, the XVIth Legion forged at the head of the Great Crusade, claiming system after system, world after world in the name of the Emperor. Being the first Primarch discovered, Horus had made several allies with other Imperial forces such as the Mechanicum and army. This led to Horus being able to secure the most up to date equipment for his legion and the 131st were amongst the worthy recipients.

The Drop Pod, although versatile, had drawbacks which led to the development of other orbital assault transports. The biggest criticism was the size of the payload - only being a half tactical squad. With the Mechanicum`s aid, the Stormbird was also scaled down to create the Storm Eagle and this enabled the 131st to fully develop the core of the tactical and despoiler squads into full size units. Alongside these were gifted several suits of the new Tactical Dreadnaught (Cataphractii pattern) Armour. One of the more experienced squads took to these and the necessary teleportation devices were added to the companies` vessel.

The 131st had now almost fully developed as an experienced and capable Orbital Assault company but it was in the Merkhian system that they were to fully enter Horus` attention.

The Merkhian system was a small system of 11 planets of which only two were habitable. One of these plants named Bostinall was ruled by a government led by an autocrat. As the 63rd Expedition Fleet approached to spread the Imperial Truth, friendly hails were received and in response a force of Solar Auxilia were despatched to bring the planet into Compliance. As the dropships entered the atmosphere, orbital defence weapons were unleashed and the entire Solar Auxilia force were slain to a man.

Horus declared a Speartip.

The 131st were one of the companies selected from the many that were available along with the 85th, 277th and the 513th. Each was designated a clear target: the 131st were granted the honour of striking the seat of government.

At the given time with Oaths of Moment fluttering on their armour, the Luna Wolves dropped from orbit. The 131st`s drop pods and Storm Eagles landed with precision in the halls of government whilst the terminators teleported directly into the throne room. With clear Astartes precision and no mercy at all, the 131st slew all the leaders of the Bostanii planet in a matter of minutes; the government guards over-awed, over-powered and terrified by the gene-enhanced warriors.

Upon hearing the news, Horus nicknamed the 131st "The Kingslayers" for striking down such a ruler so efficiently. He also gifted Captain Aeldhred, the captain of the 131st, a blade named "Hyldap" forged from Cthonian steel.

Following on from the Merkhian campaign, the Luna Wolves together with other legions left for Ullanor.

The Ullanor Campaign was to be a baptism of fire for not just the 131st but the Legion as a whole; none were to emerge unscathed.

Ullanor

" If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.” ― Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights

What can be said about the Ullanor Campaign that has not been already said? It is widely known how Horus together with the First Captain and the Justaerin engaged the Ork Warlord and tore him to pieces at great cost. What has not been said is the role of other companies during the campaign.

Due to the 131st`s experience, they were deployed to strike against a Mekaniak Gargant factory on the southern continent. Like many of their other Legionary contempories, the 131st faced a baptism of fire previously unknown.

The initial drop and teleportation was successful and hit the primary targets of the Gargant that were powering up and taking the head of the Mekaniak leading the factory. What the 131st were unprepared for was the unprecedented counter-strike by the Orks. Forced to fight in a hellish Zone Mortalis, the 131st did not have the close-up, heavy support equipment that was needed to sustain a fire-fight in such close quarters after the initial strike had been made.

As the fighting intensified, the 131st were pushed deeper and deeper into the factory. One squad, a newly formed assault squad, made its way deep into the bowels of a gargant and using their melta charges, detonated the gargant. This had the large benefit of destroying a large portion of the Ork horde that faced them but disadvantaged them by irradiating the assault squad in Orkish radiation of an unknown type.

Drawn by the large explosion, a demi-company of the XIVth Legion, the Death Guard, advanced into the rear of the Ork horde as they began to reform to assault the Kingslayers once more. Trapped between the two forces of Astartes, the Orks were wiped out.

But, it had been at a huge cost. Of the proud company that had made planet-fall, casualties stood close to 75% and of those that still walked none were unharmed. One of the greatest loses was the Company Commander, Aeldhred, who was severely injured holding of an Ork Nob leading the counter-strike. Many of the original Terrans of the company had been lost and new recruits from Cthonia, keen to prove themselves to their new Legionary brethren, had thrown themselves into combats of which they had no hope to survive.

Reform and Compliance

“War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over. - William Tecumseh Sherman

After the Triumph of Ullanor, the shattered 131st faced amalgamation into other companies of the newly named Sons of Horus to replenish loses during the Ullanor campaign. Help came from an unexpected quarter.

A Cohort of Solar Auxilia, the 2511th otherwise known as the Latins, put a request to Malaghust asking for a force of Astartes with an orbital assault specialism to support their Expeditionary Fleet in the Compliance of the expanding Imperium. Malagohust agreed with one condition; that the newly named Warmaster direct the force into an area of his choice. The Latins agreed and they were assigned the 131st Company as their supporting company.

The 131st Company that joined the 1950th Expeditionary Fleet were not the same as had landed on Ullanor. Now that they were being assigned away from their parent Legion, more emphasis was placed on autonomous support. Lessons learnt from Ullanor were also taken into account. Recruits were still emphasised from the Anglii Enclave on Terra but more were also inducted from Cthonia and they brought with them their own traditions and reflected this onto their new parent company.

Equipment was also updated and although the Drop Pod and Storm Eagle were still heavily used, the 131st Company also had access to new vehicles and weapons made available through Horus` contacts in the Mechanicum. New drop vessels in the form of Dreadclaws and Kharybdis Assault Claws were attached and to give heavier support when on the ground, Fire Raptor gunships were included as well as more Rapier systems. Realising that as being away from the XVIth Legion for long periods of time meant that resupply would be awkward, the 131st were also assigned their own Techmarine covernant and ground based vehicles were also added to support the Legion in ground operations alongside the Solar Auxilia Cohort. A final gift, made by Horus in person, took the form of a Stormbird. The majority of the company was also outfitted in the new Mk.IV plate – some in Cthonian pattern for the command and seeker squads - although the Veterans, Breacher and Heavy Support squads retained their original Mk.II and III plate for the role they served.

It was not only in new equipment that the 131st changed. A new Company Captain, Æsc, was elevated. An Astartes of Terran origin, he had served as Aeldhred`s second for many years and had learnt many things from the previous captain. As a sign of the new, growing, Cthonian members of the Company, Æsc chose a Cthonian as his personal Delegatus and second; Cynemær. As for Aeldhred himself, he had never fully recovered from his wounds on Ullanor and had been interred into a Contemptor dreadnaught and attached as advisor to the Kingslayers.

Finally, the Latins and the Kingslayers were ready for their Expeditionary Fleet to leave. They were assigned to the far north of the Imperium – the Segmentum Obscurus and told to spread the news of the Imperium via Compliance.

Years of Compliance

“I am in blood stepped in so far that should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o’er,” -Macbeth, Shakespeare

The 1950th Expeditionary Fleet brought several worlds into Compliance over a period of many years. They heard the news from afar of Horus` fall on Davin and subsequent recovery. They listened with shock as the tale of the Night Lords destruction of Nostromo was passed on. Remembrances passed on tales of great Compliance and the rise of the race of man amongst the stars.

Post-Istvaan III and the Dark Compliance

“It is better to rule in Hell, than to serve in Heaven.” - John Milton, Paradise Lost

And then news came from the Warmaster himself.

All Sons of Horus Companies were to return to Istvaan III to put down the rebellion that had emerged from that planet together with forces from the World Eaters, Emperors Children and Death Guard.

The 131st and the Latins were completing a Compliance in the Vorghest System and by the time they were prepared to leave, warpstorms had emerged that restricted their journey to the Istvaan system. By the time they arrived, the rebellion had ended but the cleansing of the Legions had begun.

Æsc was sent for by the Vengeful Spirit. As the Captain of a company that was at least 80% Terran in nature, Æsc realised that they were at risk of being destroyed by their own Primarch. During a tense audience, Æsc, as a Son of Horus and Chieftain of a Anglii warband, once more confirmed his oaths to his Progenitor upon the blade of Hyldap and the haft of Worldbreaker rather than fulfil his oaths to a distant tyrant.

As the XVIth Legion prepared to move to Istvaan V for the next stage of Horus` rebellion, Maloghust sent for Æsc. Rather than join the Legion for the Dropsite Massacre, due to the 131st experiences with the Segmentum Obscurus, the Warmaster wanted the Kingslayers to return to the galactic north and continue the Compliance of worlds. This time in the Warmaster`s name.

Together with the Latins, the Kingslayers returned to what they knew best. Returning to worlds they had already made Compliant, the 1950th Expeditionary Fleet now gave Planetary Commanders and Mechanicum Magos a simple choice: Bend the knee or die. Those who would not do one would do the other.

After the failure of the Dropsite Massacre to complete Horus` rebellion in one stroke, the XVIth Legion travelled to the north of galaxy and with their stalwart allies in the XIVth Legion, carved out their own enclave. The 131st were part of the leading edge of this together with the Latins.

Characters and Units of the 131st

Preator Æsc Inducted into the company as a recruit from the Anglii Enclave on Terra, Æsc rose through the ranks until just before the Ullanor Campaign he was second in command of the 131st. Following Aeldhred`s woundings and internment into a dreadnought, Æsc become the Company Captain. The greatest challenge he has had to face is combining the Terran traditions of the Company alongside the new Cthonian traditions of the latest recruits. Æsc is highly respected by all members of the Company and following the outbreak of the Heresy, he kept to his oaths to Horus rather than his loyalty to the Imperium. Not a Lodge member. Command Squad Ferhweard (Guard of Life) Squad Ferhweard has always the epitome of the 131st and populated by the most respected and powerful members of the Company. Never to be found away from Captain Æsc, the Command Squad has expanded to include Cthonian as well as Terran members in an effort to unite the two halves of the Company. Admission is only possible once key enemies have been slain and Ferhweard is rewarded with the original Terran equipment of the Company. Members are often drawn from the Seeker and Despoiler-sections of the Company. Contains some Lodge members.

Delegatus Cynemær (Famed Royal) Originally a recruit from Cthonia, Cynemær was responsible for introducing several Cthonian cultural traits into the 131st Company. A violent individual who has shown a lot of bravery particularly during the Krhoesis Campaign where together with Squad Onhigian he charged and destroyed a key enemy position. Cynemær is ambitious but he is fanatically loyal to Captain Æsc and the 131st. A Lodge member.

Master of Signal Mæl (Conversation, contest battle) Mæl is the current Master of Signal for the 131st. This is a key role within the Company as he often accompanies the first wave of the Orbital Assault in order to help communicate with subsequent waves and co-ordinate orbital support. Mæl often works alongside Cynemær as both served in the same gang on Cthonia and later in the same squad within the 131st. Not a Lodge member.

Librarius Drỳcræft (Magical Art, Sorcery) Once a member of Squad Feorstudu, Drỳcræft was soon identified by the Legion Librarius has having some talent for psychic ability. Having undertaken his basic training, Drỳcræft was then sent to the Thousand Sons for cross-training. Whilst with the Thousand Sons, he was taught forms of psychic ability that he was otherwise unaware of. Upon his return to the Legion and the 131st Company, he was gifted with a Tutelary in the same manner as the Thousand Sons. Lodge Master of the Company.

Despoiler Squad Onhigian (To Despoil) A Terran unit with some Cthonian recruits that has adopted the Warmasters` Despoiler tactics. Squad Onhigian are often deployed by Kharbydis Assault Claw once a weak spot in the enemies` lines have been discovered. Using saturation fire tactics followed up a vicious assault, Sqaud Onhigian are a clear favourite of Centurion Cynemær who often joins them on the battlefield. One of the main line units of the 131st. Contains some Lodge members.

Tactical Squad Hæst (Fury, Violence) The Primarch of the Sons of Horus claimed that there was nothing that could not be achieved by a tactical squad and Squad Hæst emphasise this point. They are often inserted by Storm Eagle Assault Gunship into an area of the thickest fighting. They are dependable fighters and focus on targeted shooting over assaults however, being Sons of Horus, they do not shy away from such combat. Another Terran unit recruited from the Saxonicii enclave. Contains some Lodge members.

Despoiler Squad Cwaltt (Violent Death, Slaughter) Despoiler Squad Cwaltt are a Cthonian unit that was recruited to the Company after the discovery of Cthonia and the Primarch. Like all Despoiler Squads they focus on saturation fire followed by assaults. Unlike the 131st`s other tactical squads, they are deliberately at the minimum size so as to be able to be transported by drop pod. Often deployed in the first wave of any attacks to target main areas of resistance. Contains several Lodge members. Assault Squad Getæl (Swift, Having Mastery) Recruited mainly from Terra together with recent recuits from Cthonia, Squad Getæl date from when the 131st first undertook its training for Orbital Assault missions. Often deploying from Stormbird dropship high above the battlefield, Squad Getæl focus on key objectives such as super heavy vehicles or key enemy positions. Often high casualties are a risk they face in the completion of their missions and they suffer one of the highest unit recruitments in the 131st. Several Lodge members form part of the unit.

Breacher Squad Shealdburh (Shieldwall) Squad Shealdburh were the final unit added to the 131st Company after the secondment to the 1950th Expeditionary Fleet. With the primary purpose of anti-boarding of the companies` strike cruiser, Ettin, Squad Shealdburh have also been used in Zone Mortalis actions where they have often work alongside Despoiler Squad Cwaltt. Contains some Lodge Members.

Tactical Support Squad Feorstudu (Support) Tactical Support Squad Feorstudu are a Terran unit that originate from the beginnings of the 131st Company. Dating from a time when the Legions were changing from the volkite weapon to the bolt weapon as the main armament. The Sons of Horus still felt that the Volkite Caliver in particular, was well suited as a support weapon and so Squad Feorstudu was formed to give medium range support to the Speartip units. Contains some Lodge members.

Apothecarion Detachment The Apothecaries are a key part of the Company, maintaining health within the 131st and treating the wounded. During battle, the battlefield Apothecaries often accompany Squads Hæst and Onhigian as these contain the largest concentration of legionaries and often in the thickest part of the fighting.

Techmarine Covernant The Techmarines are charged with maintaining the equipment and vehicles of the 131st. Key emphasis is placed on the drop vehicles of the Company as these are essential to the safe transport of the troops under combat conditions.

Veteran Squad Ealdfeond (Old Foe) Another full Terran unit within the company recruited at its founding. Unlike Squad Eadburga, Squad Ealdfeond specialise in lightning assaults from landing craft or wide sweeping manoeuvres. Often deployed by Dreadclaw. These Astartes have several decades of experience and lend their support on the battlefield to where it is needed the most, focusing on a fluid fighting style that does not pin them in place for too long. They are the eptiome of the Warmasters` Wolves. None of its members belongs to the Lodges.

Terminator Squad Eadburga (Wealthy Fortress) A full Terran unit from the original founding of the company. Whilst acting as a veteran tactical unit, they displayed a tendency for attacking key battlefield targets; enemy champions, warleaders, witches and so forth. Before the Merkhian Campaign they were issued with the new Terminator Plate and were a key strikeforce; slaying the "Merkhian King" together with his bodyguard. Often used as the Point of the Spear in Orbital Assaults. Some of its members have recently become part of the Lodges.

Rapier Weapons Battery Only deployed when the 131st has made the initial Speartip assault, the rapiers of the company provide much needed Anti-Tank support for a light drop company. Destroyer Cadre Fordón (Bring to Ruin, Corrupt) Originally recruited as a Cthonian assault squad to support Squad Getæl, Squad Fordón met with a different fate during the Ullanor Campaign. Tasked to destroy an Ork Gargant, Squad Fordón was irradiated by an unknown type of Ork radiation that the Legions apothecaries were unable to treat. It was Centurion Cynemær who suggested that the squad be reconstituted as a Destroyer Cadre. Since that time Squad Fordón have often taken on the most dangerous foes and tasks bringing phospex and rad weapons to the enemy. Contains several Lodge members.

Seeker Squad Wáþ (Pursuit, hunt, chase) Squad Wáþ was one of the earliest elite units placed within the 131st Company. Intended to act as the focus in a Speartip operation, squad Wáþ is often tasked with destroying enemy commanders or key units often deploying by Dreadclaw. Recruitment into the unit is by merit and new members must have proven himself by killing a key enemy combatant in ranged combat. Squad Wáþ has taken on several Cthonian cultural traits and proudly show their kills by the use of skulls attached to their armour despite the majority of the unit still being Terran. Contains some Lodge Members.

Deathstorm Drop Pod A commonly used piece of equipment in the first wave of drop assaults. Horus acquired the design from his brother Corax in order to provide his drop companies with some means of clearing landing zones before the main assault. The 131st often use the Krak variant as a means to target enemy armour and heavily armoured troops. Vindicator A rarely used piece of equipment by the 131st due to their role as a drop company. However, in times of protracted campaigns or when engaging in heavily built up areas, the Vindicator us deployed. Often the despoiler squads of the company will fight alongside the vehicle as the fearsome Demolisher Cannon will weaken the foe allowing the despoiler squads to engage in assault quickly.

Heavy Support Squad Ofweorpan (To Kill with a missile) A Terran unit from the Anglii enclave that has members as part of the Lodges. The first heavy support squad from the founding of the company. It is noticeable that Sergeant Leofrikh only allows Terran recruits to replace any casualties. Often deployed in a first wave via drop pod to focus fire on key targets providing a threat to the first wave with priority being vehicular targets. Squad Ofweorpan won fame during the Ullanor Campaign by destroying an entire mob of heavily armoured Nobz before they could make contact with Squad Getæl who were targeting a Big Mek and his entourage.

Heavy Support Squad Wierp (Cast, Throw) Recruited with a mix of Terran and Cthonian recruits just before the Merkhian campaign, Squad Wierp proved its worth during the second wave when it was deployed by drop pod and destroyed several light vehicles that threatened to outflank the initial drop forces. Together with Tactical Support Squad Feorstudu, Squad Wierp is often used for suppressive fire to allow the larger tactical units and Speartip forces to fully engage the enemy. Unusually for units with Cthonian recruits, none of its members belong to the Lodges.
