History

The 81st Line Company of the XVIII Legion has a long and storied history, able to draw its lineage back to the Assault of the Tempest Galleries during the Unification Wars. One of the more active line companies, the 81st was always at the forefront of campaigns, then departing as soon as they were no longer needed, headed to the next combat action. Due to this, they developed a both a fearsome reputation as well as a very distinctive fighting style, relying on a mechanized assault supported by armoured heavy vehicles, eschewing more static forms of support such as rapiers and fortifications. This form of warfare secured them a place alongside Vulkan himself when the time came to bring the Warmaster Horus to task on Isstvan V.

The 81st Line Company was deployed in close proximity to the Primarch, suffering through some of the bloodiest fighting throughout the battle. Joining the effort to find Vulkan, Captain Tann'Lok was gravely injured by a Death Guard quad mortar bombardment. Found by a fleeing contingent of Raven Guard, the Captain was carried to safety aboard a XIX Legion Stormeagle and escaped the traitor's clutches. Awakening well after warp translation, Tann'Lok began organizing surviving members of his legion, and worked his way back to Nocturne to regroup, rearm, and plan his response to the treachery at Isstvan.

Upon arrival at Prometheus, Tann'Lok was granted the title of Lord Protector of Aethonion, being the most senior officer to return from Isstvan with lineage to the Nocturnean realm and with the presumed death of the previous Commander upon the black sands. He then organised the remainder of the Realm's surviving Firedrakes "The Anvil of Aethonion" and went about replenishing the ranks of the 81st using newly trained recruits from Nocturne, as well as the remaining Aethonion survivors of Isstvan. He quickly set about to prosecute his retribution on his traitor brethren, employing the tactics the company was known for on any and every traitor they could find. It was with this purpose that the 81st Line Company made its way to the Golloch Cluster.
