Battle Summary

What began as a small initial engagement, quickly escalated into a significant firefight between the Iron Hands and World Eaters on Talasa Prime. This was primarily brought about by the eagerness of the "Warhounds" to engage and destroy the enemy at close quarters. The Iron Hands would have preferred to have made a tactical withdrawal at this stage in the campaign, as they still lacked the supplies to fight a sustained engagement. However, once the World Eaters' company commander received the enemy's location transmitted over the Vox, he immediately rallied his detachment and gave the orders to attack with extreme prejudice. The ferocity of the World Eater's attack took the Iron Hands by surprise, but staying true to their legions' stubborn trait, they quickly rallied and fought fire with fire.

Following the two enemy patrols engaging over the lost communication devices, both sides escalated the engagement and decided that attack would be the best form of defense. Following a scan of the battlefield's topography, commanders quickly decided on tactical objectives for the forthcoming engagement. Players set-up 6 tactical objectives that are individually number from 1 through to 6 on the battlefield, using the rules for placing objectives (pp 134 of the main rule book). The primary objective for this battle is to secure as many objective markers as possible. Secondary objectives include Slay the Warlord, First Blood and Linebreaker. Mission special rules include Tactical Objectives, Night Fighting and Reserves (if you have acquired this ability from Mission 1). The mission uses a variable game length (pp 133 of the main rule book). The winner of this mission gains an extra 250 pts in the final mission.

The World Eaters' armour deployed on left flank with their infantry either in the gully or within the ruins on the right.

The Iron Hands used the hill to conceal their armour, while some of the infantry advanced into forward positions (a tactic that Lord Wellington would have advocated).

An Iron Hands Predator Tank is the first to see the approaching threat of a Storm Eagle Gunship.

The World Eater Landraider breaks cover down the centre, supported by a squad of Breacher Marines and a Contemptor Pattern Dreadnought.

In answer to the approaching threat, a talon of Iron Hands Contemptors push forward through the undergrowth.

The World Eater Sicaran Battle Tank takes aim with its accelerater autocannon and lascannon sponsons.

The World Eater infantry takes cover in the ruins while securing one of the objectives and the Storm Eagle Gunship has a dreadful first round of shooting, pretty much missing with everything it fired.

Hull points were taken off the Iron Hands' Contemptors as they advance over the hill into contact.

The Iron Hands' commander ordered all of his armour to advance and open with their big guns.

Sustained fire from Iron Hands Predators, jetbikes and infantry brings down the Storm Eagle Gunship  :(

Sustained fire from the Predators, achieves another vital kill on the World Eater formation.

Breachers move up to secure the objective.

Following some good rounds of shooting by the World Eater Contemptor, it charges home against the remaining jetbike.

In an attempt to threaten the World Eaters' objective in the centre of the battlefield, the Iron Hands bring forward their tactical reserve. Meanwhile, the World Eater Landraider continues to pump lascannon shots into the Predators, destroying one of them completely.

The Breacher Squad are driven off the objective by fire from the rhino and the tactical squad.

The disgraced Breacher Squad scurried away down the gully.

The battle ended with World Eater Landraider marauding around in the Iron Hands deployment zone.
