PRELIMINARY HISTORY
The planetary system known now as
Anhalt was separated from its nearest neighbours during the Age of Strife like much of mankinds dominion of the stars. Once a verdant agri-world, Anhalt iii changed over time to a more industrial mindset. With the huge surpluses of food not leaving the planet the population was allowed to explode.
With this population boom, the
high technology that the original inhabitants were used to began to run down and deteriorate. This led to the regression of the Technological level of the planet. Gone were many of the STC's, and much that was done by machinery had to be done with manpower. With the meteoric rise in population and the decay of technological ease, tensions rose. In order to soothe these tensions, states were implemented so that like minded groups could govern themselves. The struggle between each of these groups was lessened and trade was started. The solution seemed to work and all the states prospered.
With this new found prosperity,
border disputes started to become commonplace as human greed is unavailable, and the heads of state thought of how to defend their own territory. Powerful alliances and bitter enmities were made.
At first these border disputes were
small skirmishes, and for years and years this remained the norm. However grudges being what they are, these small scale battles escalated to larger and larger. It got to the point where millions and millions were deployed in each war.
Casualties were above what anyone
had ever wanted. Each war was filled with dozens of battles, or meat grinders.
THE GREAT CRUSADE
This is where the XIVth legion came
to find the system and first made contact. Compliance was nearly bloodless and peace was negotiated between all parties involved. The small detachment of Death Guard that was leading this expedition fleet stayed on Anhalt III as the plants was brought back into the fold of the fledgling Imperium. Industrial facilities were upgraded and new training regimes were set up for the armies.
The population was trained and
mobilized for action in the ongoing Great Crusade. Extra troop transports and capital ships were ordered to this system and the 1023rd expedition fleet swelled in size.
With just 5% of the population
recruited for the Crusade, this was a hammer to break any planet that stood in the way of compliance. Many tried. Many lie in ruin.
THE HORUS HERESY
With the civil war sparked on Istvaan,
life was changed forever.
