Geographic Overview

There are three main landmasses on Þungur Metallikos. Most human life is located on the two main continent, Þungur Metallikos Prime and Þungur Metallikos Secundus, separated by a wide straight known simply as Hells Gap. The bulk of the sub-continents of Prime and Secundus are covered in ash wastes, the aftereffects of many millennia of industrial pollution. Several hive cities house the planet's human population and the industry of Þungur Metallikos; these include Diabolisgaard on Prime and Hivernigrad and Tejas Secundus on Secundus. West of Þungur Metallikos Prime lies the Island of Tempestora Infernus and Hive Varingaheim; location of the Planetary Governors Palace and the seat of Imperial power on Þungur Metallikos.

To the south of Hells Gap and east of Tejas Secundus are the Ash Wastes, which are home to the penal colony of Iron Bay and its extensive mining and resource gathering industries that support the hive cities' factories. This is an extremely arid region, which has been strip-mined far beyond the point that it can maintain any living ecosystem.

To the south of Iron Bay lies the ice-covered Deadzone. The polluted ice here is melted and heavily purified to provide a source of drinking water to the inhabitants of the Þungur Metallikos hive cities.

The Ash Wastes

The Ash Wastes are located in the area surrounding Iron Bay. It is the location of many of the ore mines that supply the main settled Þungur Metallikos regions with resources in order to create the industry and weapons the world needs to survive.

The vast Straya Rock Mountains cover most of the northern region of the Ash Wastes. They are burning, volcanic mountains where not a breath of air stirs. It is from here that the lava River Hera springs, which is dammed by the Mora Novis Hydro-Electric Dam which provides power to the Ash Wastes' mining operations. The dam also splits the river into two. There is a pass through the Straya Rock range, named the Arevor Creek Canyon, which used to be a fast-flowing river but has since dried up and turned into a hot desert-like pass whose heat and other hazards can kill even the best prepared travelers.

The Obcasus Tar Pits are another region of inhospitable terrain, although these pits have been mined for thousands of years and the ore is used in the industrial processes of the main Þungur Metallikos continents.

Another river is the Cerebus River which goes around the Obcasus Tar Pits and past the Cerebus River Refinery and the Cerebus River Mineral Storage Facility and exits into the Acid Sea via the Iron Bay Penal Colony.

The sea itself also contains the Vapora Oil Platform, vital for the functioning of the weapons manufacturers on the mainland. The main port is named the Ember Harbour and is home to hundreds of miles of docks and rigging equipment, designed to transport the minerals excavated and refined in the Ash Wastes to Manufactorum NH-PEP:758-H6.

The Deadzone

The Deadzone is the south most region on the planet. It contains one of the two main water processing plants, and this is broken down into the Avalan Water Processing Plant and the minor Thaumus River Water Processing Plant. The water is then pumped through overland pipes to the Neptune Channel Water Pumping Station which stores and then pumps water through the undersea pipes to both Hive Varingaheim and Hive Tejas Secundus. There is also the Cendis Oil Drilling Station which supplies oil to Iron Bay. The Spirans Gamma Oil Platform also provides oil and is located off the north west coast of the Deadzone. Another oil producing site is the Ferrus Point Oil Drilling Station, located far to the east. Finally, there is the Zardur Ice Station Defense Fortress which protects the entire region from orbital attacks and provides a vital bastion of strength to the defenders of the region.

Hives of Þungur Metallikos

Tempestora Infernus

Varingaheim

Varingaheim-Hive-Map.jpg

Varingaheim. Imperial Capital of Þungur Metallikos. The shining star rising above the swampy, murky depths, secluded as it is on the third inhabitable continent of the planet. A hive born out of necessity during Compliance on a world too divided between Royal Houses and Merchant Princelings to ever be united behind the banner of any trueborn son or daughter of the first settlers arriving before the arrival of Old Night. The civil wars of the past had been rekindled years prior to the first Expeditionary fleet of the fledgling Imperium arriving in the system, dividing the Houses yet further and making compliance complicated; a divided foe suffers defeat far more quickly at the hands of the Astartes sent against them. From a world divided rose the spire of Varingaheim. A Palace worthy of an Imperial potentate, a capital from which to spread the Imperial Truth amongst the populace of Þungur Metallikos. The mountain peak of Aegir Primus was the site chosen by the Magos Constructor of the Mechanicum, a site chosen for strength and the significance in local mythos as a place of great importance. No creed other than the Imperial Truth would be allowed to stand.

Not long after construction the Compliance effort was greatly compromised. An uprising within the new capital of Þungur Metallikos enforced a communications blackout as the forces of Governor-Elect Angantir Faxe fought to contain the escalating violence as it turned out into all-out civil strife. Astartes, Auxilia, Militia and the faceless constructs of the Mechanicum fought against men possessed with belief and armed with faith in false gods. Mere mortals cannot stand against post-humans and walking steel however, and the uprising was put down at the edge of a sword. Although the damage had already been done. The blackout sparked sedition in the hearts of the oligarchs of Diabolisgaard who never hesitated raising an army to march against Varingaheim and the Governor-Elect.

As the fires within died down and with the realisation that the hives defences were still compromised, Angantir Faxe uttered a single sentence: “Unsheathe Tyrfing, teach those no longer loyal a lesson”. Tyrfing, a weapon designed by the Magos Biologis, Genetor and Reductor on behest of a Primarch for a war better left forgotten. This weapon, once unsheathed, can never be put away until death and destruction has been wrought and it took mere minutes to destroy the approaching militia army, sending reverberations back into Diabolisgaard itself. So Imperial Peace was restored, yet at a cost no one would be aware of for a long time.

The peace on Þungur Metallikos is and has always been a fragile one. Not everyone was happy with the idea of Compliance, fewer yet of their hive not being chosen as the seat of Imperial power. Out of necessity a new army was raised to protect Varingaheim. A hive with three billion souls within its walls needs protection from within as well as without, and the twelve regiments of Varangoi Auxilia was raised and trained in style of the Solar Auxilia regiments already stationed within Varingaheim. There would be peace in the Waacos System, by truce or by sword. Imperial power was writ clear to see on the land, yet what the future have in stall no one can predict…

Rumours are trickling through the Astropathic wards on Gospel station. The Imperium, divided.

Þungur Metallikos Prime

Diabolisgaard

Diabolisgaard has always been a haven for Þungur Metallikos’ future political elite. Posh mansions and elegant ceremony are the mainstays of this cultural juggernaut. Heated debates take place in the House of Figures, where young political members cut their teeth in the dangerous world of Diabolisgaard power politics, and aged, wealthy benefactors dictate domestic, and inter-hive trade policies. Their aspirations have ever since Compliance been Imperial; their rivalry with the chosen capital of Varingaheim is a matter of record, not myth.

As the planet began to devolve into warring city-states with no semblance of Imperial government, members of the House of Figures petitioned the Imperial Governor, Angantir Faxe, to muster the Imperialis Militia and unify the planet, using force if necessary. No one answered the call. The factionalism that had begun years ago, tied the menials and lowborn to their cities, and they swore fealty to their homes over some distant governor. Some members of the House of Figures pooled resources to create the first mercenary tercios, waiving the cost as a token of allegiance. When the communications from the capital fell silent and no word could be heard out of Varingaheim, the Militia-Army under General Superbicus marched upon its sister Hive. They were never heard from again…

The House of Figures immediately lost all faith in the Imperial Governor after the destruction of their forces at his hand. Declaring his ability to defend the Imperial Truth and its doctrines as inadequate the rulers of Diabolisgaard took matters into their own hands. Forming a new organisation, the Imperial Assemblies, they started mustering their own armies from the Hives extensive servile population. Bahran Drego, war hero and general of the Imperial Army recently returned to Þungur Metallikos, as the commander of their military forces and the rightful Planetary Governor. The Imperial Assemblies will stop at nothing to restore control over Þungur Metallikos, and aide the Golden Throne in its war against Horus. Several members of the defunct House of Figures, did not join the Imperial Assemblies. These merchants, politicians, and creditors openly challenged Drego’s appointment, claiming Faxe as the true governor. They set to work building another mercenary army and presented Faxe with “The Accord of Governance and Sovereignty of the True Imperium.” This accord decreed all armies mustered without direct Imperial permission illegal, as well as, any political body not actively engaging with the Planetary Governor. Ceding the new army to Angantir Faxe, as well as, the legal framework from which to prosecute any divergent sects, the “Accorders,” as they were pejoratively called, then secretly reached out to Horus Lupercal. The Accorders were to give the planet over to the Warmaster upon its unification, in exchange for favour and continued political dominance. With their open support of the outwardly silent governor writ in stone, the Accorders seek to remove all obstacles for the arrival of the forces of liberation.

Not all of Diabolisgaard is wealthy, political elite. There are uncountable millions thriving in the Underdark of the hive’s lower levels. Whilst they make up the vast majority of population, none of the decision making power reaches these low-born. This disparity in power is recognized by the guerrilla-nationalist movement, The Primordial Brotherhood. The Brotherhood seeks to “return Þungur Metallikos to its people, throwing off the yoke of Imperial and Warmonger alike.” Through clandestine assaults, coercion, and propaganda, the Primordial Brotherhood has achieved a great deal of traction. Underground networks of freedom fighters disrupt the actions of the other organizations. Their resources are low, and the noose of political and financial power is tightening, The Primordial Brotherhood seeks a true military presence capable of delivering the world of Þungur Metallikos back to its true people.

Hearing the news of the death of the Planetary Governor, the Assemblies make fast to fill the power vacuum. They promptly declare Bahran Drego the rightful Planetary Governor and Diabolisgaard the true capital of Thungur Metalikos. Expending nearly all of their political and financial resources, the Assemblies begin sending out their own assassins and saboteurs, targeting Accorder-sympathetic leadership and the adjacent hive city life support systems. They first seek to quell the unrest and unite Diabolisgaard, while also weakening the other hive cities, in particular Varanginheim... As Accorder aristocracy began to go dark and rumours of increased assassin activity, they replied viciously with military and police force. Whole families disappear over night, while military outposts are established at all major population centers throughout Diabolisgaard. The Accorders employ their own assassins, ruthlessly hunting down Assembly members and loyal commanders alike. Diabolisgaard alleyways begin to run red with the blood of civil strife.

Manufactorum NH-PEP: 758-H6

The murky swamps of Þhungur Metallikus have always been home to roving tribes of Orks who worship the naturally occurring flame pyres. These tribes need regular culling less they grow too large and in the years since compliance many smaller refineries have been raided and destroyed.

The Swamp Barons have controlled the promethium trade on the planet for millennia, some of them with (highly debatable) lineages stretching back to the original settlers before Old Night. Shortly after compliance a massive network of refineries and pumping stations were established in the northern hemisphere. Crewed by the tech-priests of the Mechanicum and overseen by the local militias they account for almost 45% of the planets total export.

The largest of these stations is 758-H6, a massive construction of corroded metal, ruled over by Lord-Baron Cohennius Sashyr and Decimus HxxR-37 High Cognomancer of the Omnissiah. 758-H6 is equipped with a small space port which is mostly used for inter planetary shipping and has multiple levels of fortifications that has so far withstood several large Ork raids.

Many smaller stations and a vast network of promethium lines are spread over the swamp covered continent. It is all connected to the central refinery facilities at 758-H6 with heavily guarded waystations along the pipelines. The feudal connections between baronies of promethium nobles and their constant low intensity warfare between each other and against the scattered tribes of swamp Orks makes the job of manning these stations a risky job at best. Militias, mercenaries and baronial guards all live short and brutal lives in the perennial smog of the swamps surrounding 758-H6.

Rumours abound of dark dungeons hidden in the mires around 758-H6, where the Tech Priest experiment on captured Ork subjects and keep all manners of proscribed tech found in the sunken ruins of the murky depths. Since the baronies all need the expertise of the Mechanicum to keep the promethium flowing many adepts have massive resources at their disposal so these dark rumours might very well be true.

Lately the lesser swamp barons have sent in increasing reports of waystations going dark and of people going missing in large numbers. No trace can be found at any site except for a few blue and green-tinted scales…

Þungur Metallikos Secundus

Hivernigrad

In the frozen wastes and glacial peaks of Þungur Metallikos Secundus lies the colossal arctic domain of the Tsarinas, Hivernigrad, the Winter City. A sprawling domain of bitter cold, Hivernigrad is home to billions of grim souls, barely elevated from the basest slavery, labouring out a meek existence amongst the smokey factories and fungal-plantations that dot the forbidding landscape. In her kingdom cold, Tsarina Anastasia IX rules with an icy fist, her secret police ruthlessly stamping out any resistance to her dominion. From atop the opulent Winter Palace, her and her court live lives of endless splendour, while below the grim cycle of life and death grinds on in abject horror.

When compliance came to Þungur Metallikos the Tsarinas happily accepted Imperial rule, hoping that membership in the fledgling empire of mankind would put a lid on the the brewing tensions on the factory floors of her ice kingdom. And for many decades this was the case, and millions of conscripts would be raised and shipped off to join the Great Crusade, never to be heard from again. Over time the colossal toll of the Emperor's wars began to tell on the weary population, and grumblings of discontent were heard throughout Hivernigrad. Then came news of the start of the Interlegionnary War, and the Tsarina pledged to raise a billion women and men to defend the Throne. But the population was not enthusiastic at the prospect of throwing out another generation of its young in the service of the Emperor's war machine. And the Tsarina would soon learn that the revolt quietly simmering among her population was not simply the work of a few malcontents.

An envoy of the Warmaster, Lenius, had arrived in the underhive of Hivernigrad and was stoking the fires of revolt against the rule of the Tsarina. To the poor and the suffering of the Winter City he promised peace and food and an end to Anastasia's bloody rule. Along with these words he brought massive numbers of arms and equipment to help stage an overthrow of the Tsarina and her cronies. When she learned of this brewing revolution, the Tsarina sent a dozen regiments of militia to stamp out the revolt and hang the ringleaders, especially Lenius. But soon her forces began fraternizing with the rebels, and shortly thereafter most switched sides. Soon words reached her that the rebels had stormed several prisons and released thousands of political prisoners. The civil war at Hivernigrad had begun...

History

Þungur Metallikos is an Imperial Hive World located 15,000 light years to the galactic east in the Australis Ultima Sector.

The world of Þungur Metallikos is the only planet in the Waacos star system and itis the industrial hub of both the Centrumeh Sub-Sector and the greater region of the surrounding Australis UIltima Sector. Many worlds within a several light-year radius of Þungur Metallikos rely on it for its large industrial output.

Thousands of standard years of industrial output has reduced the surface of Þungur Metallikos to barren wastelands and polluted oceans; humans can only survive within the artificial environment of the world's hive cities (the massive arcology-like structures that stand several kilometres tall) and Imperial military and Mechanicum facilities. Food must be imported from off-planet, and clean air and water are precious commodities.
