History

The Maldraco complex is small, by the standards of the Mechanicum, but some observers have said they make up for that through sheer pride.

It was that same pride, slighted by the frankly hamfisted demands of the Imperial Fists garrison on the planet, that ensured the Manufactorum's armed forces turned on the garrison within hours of the arrival of another Legion in the system. Some might have named this other Legion as Traitors, but as far as the Maldraco Magi were concerned they were far more respectful of the tech-priests of Mars, and the Loyalist troops were cordially invited to go boil their heads. The Manufactorum's production of specialized cybernetic appendages was not going to be interrupted by anyone, whether Emperor or Warmaster, and this resistance to outside interference was as good as axiomatic for the Manufactorum's defenders.

As it was, the excessive pride of the Maldraco Archmagos was reinforced by their outstanding successes on the radioactive hell-world of Paradisum Mundi, during the Second Golloch War. Huge quantities of Loyalist war machines, and ancient archeotech, were captured by the Requisition Clade, and promptly used in the pursuit of more. In fact, this windfall was so tempting that the clade failed to reinforce Death Guard operations elsewhere in the Golloch Cluster, no doubt to Mortarion's ire.

This ire became mutual, after the Culling of Sterith Prime, and the discovery by the Magi that fully half of the human refugees they harvested from the planet were infected by warp-tainted bioweapons. That Alpha Legion's Cell 17 first released the virus was unknown, at the time.

Historitor-Investigatus Cassius Scelo, examining what records remained after the end of the civil war, suggests that the Sovriddar Cataclysm ended the usefulness of the clade as a military force. It seems highly likely that the Maldraco tech-priests were deliberately ignoring orders from Mortarion and the Warmaster in the weeks leading up to the disaster, and had instead diverted their mass-carriers to the backwater agri-world, for unknown reasons. All remaining evidence suggests that the Arch-Magos was killed in the same explosion that destroyed the Emperor-class Titan Deus ex Machina, and scoured most of the planet down to molten rock.
