History

The Forge World of Guernica was an anomaly when discovered by the explorator fleets of the Great Crusade. The Machine Cult was alive and well on the world as it was on all Forge Worlds, however there was an intense medical focus. Such wonderful juvant treatments came from the world that it came to be known as the World of the Undying. Human life spans were elongated and bettered by the technology carefully managed by the Forge-Fathers who looked upon their subjects with a compassion almost unheard of in the Imperium. The Lachrimallus ruled the world as physician-lords, gaining a reputation of powerful healers rather than the ruthless peddlers in human flesh so common on other forge worlds.

This idyllic vision was not to last, however, as the fires of the Heresy wound their way through the warp routs to unsuspecting Guernica, isolated and uninformed thanks to the Ruinstorm.

When the Death Guard fleet translated into the system there was no alarm, nor taghmata raised, for these were the conquering hero's of the Great Crusade, seeking succor. It was only when they posted at high anchor and annihilated several outlying Forge-Fanes and Hospitalus complexi in a surprise bombardment their true colors were shown. Reeling, the tech-priests swiftly marshalled their forces as void shields were raised and guns pointed to the hostile sky. Huge landing forces and waves of drop pods assailed the planet, and the marines inside were met with castellax, vorax, and thalaxi cohorts. The Death Guard, seeing that their bombardment would fall upon an unbreakable curtain sought horrific measures to break the deadlock. Horrific bio-weaponry was unleashed and the whole planet suffered. Tech-priests of the Lachrimallus wept bitter tears, or bleated distressed code-bursts as the charges they had spent so much time and effort caring for over hundreds of years wasted away before their eyes. Casualties mounted on both sides as the war raged on, the Death Guard began pushing back the forces of the Machine God. The Archimandrite could not stock his workshops with workers as disease killed or made invalids of his people, thus his machines of war could not be produced to protect those he cared for so dearly. It is in this dark hour, as defeat seemed immanent, that Ikabod Kynes, howling in despair, ordered the bodies of the revered dead to be collected. So many there were that he merely needed to send his scylax and vorax to the hab-centers and the cadavers spilled forth from improvised disease wards and triage centers.

The dead rose on Guernica.

Dark Rites from the Age of Strife, long reviled, had been invoked and hordes of the fearless dead marched on the Death Guard. With them came what remained of the Forge World's forces, castellax and vorax supported the undead horde along with captured and repurposed kastellans, their ceaseless wandering ended by harsh control circuits. Steadily the Death Guard were pushed back and overwhelmed by the ocean of dead of their own making. The Navy of Guernica struck out against the superior Death Guard fleet as the reclaimed guns of the Forge World reaped a toll on the forces of the Reaper. After a hasty extraction the remaining ships were pursued out of the system. What they left behind was a carnival of horrors. The walking warrior dead outnumbered the living on the forge world, but not for long. The Ruling Lachrimillae swore that Horus and his treacherous ilk would pay, for the beautiful and just world they had built had been torn down and replaced with a horrifying hellscape of lobotomized warriors. Ikabod Kynes leads his forces into the fires of war, tending to his old friends and patients with care even as they are slain time and again on battlefields under distant suns. There was a dream that was Guernica, but that is no more.
