History

When the reports of the Heresy first started trickling back to Mars, there were some who cared little for the internal politics of the Imperium, but were deeply concerned for the implications the Heresy generated. For some, the biggest concern was not in whom held the greatest position of power, but in the potential loss in databases and knowledge that the Heresy could inflict upon the memory banks of the Mechanicum's closely-guarded secrets.

Mustering a force of collaborating Forgeworld Taghmatas, in conjunction with the Legiones Skitarii, elements of the Mechanicum coalesced into what became known colloquially as "Reclaimation Congregations," or "Reclaimation Taghmata." These organizations were primarily focused on collecting wayward technology and data from warzones affected by the Heresy, to keep them from being destroyed or lost forever to the ravages of war.

One such organization was the Reclaimation Taghmata Murdax, consisting of Mechanicum forces mustered from the Forgeworld Murdax as well as allied Legiones Skitarii from Mars. With the Schism of Mars still unfolding, the ruling Magos of Murdax decided to abstain from taking sides in the Heresy. Instead, they sent small expeditionary forces across the known galaxy, intent on recovering and collecting technology and data that would further increase the Forgeworld's standing with Mars... No matter the end result of the civil war in the Imperium.

Coolly detached from either side, the Reclaimation Taghmatas operated under a greater autonomy and range of freedom unattainable by many who chose sides in the conflict. These Taghmatas operated under the assumption of neutrality in most cases but they often found themselves coming under fire from either side, as each side were often determined to see technology destroyed before falling into the hands of their enemies. This led to the Reclaimation Taghmatas perfecting the art of so-called "Lightning Retrievals" in which they would retrieve particularly high-priority data or technological prototypes with extreme prejudice and at extreme speeds.

This emphasis on lightning-strike-warfare has resulted in the predominance of Battle Automata within the Reclaimation Taghmata Murdax. The superior mobility of the Automata, coupled with their rugged construction, allowed for rapid assaults that resulted in fewer casualties. This was also a particular benefit to the Forgeworld Murdax, which had been a major manufacturer of Castellax-class Battle-Automata for a considerable period. Murdax was also the leading manufacturer of the prototype Castellax "F.0907" Class Battle-automata, which utilized simpler construction methods and more economical materials than the typical Castellax Battle-Automata produced at the time, in exchange for increased bulk and mass. This facilitated quicker battlefield repairs, plentiful replacement Automata, and less logistical strain on the Reclaimation Taghmata operating from Murdax.

This particular Reclaimation Taghmata, designated "Murdax 907135", was specifically suited for void warfare and ship-borne combat. Pioneering the "Automata Wall" technique of barricading critical corridors and junctions, the 907135 would often use the superior bulk of the Castellax F.0907 Battle-Automata to provide a barrier against incoming fire, from which a Magos could then employ radioactive weaponry from a position of impunity. Although this tactic often resulted in casualties to their own ship's servitors and crewmen from radioactive fallout left behind, this was frequently overlooked in favor of its effectiveness in eradicating hostile boarding parties.
