Battle Summary
With the act of rebellion the Baylonian Synod brought the wrath of not only the Loyalists but the Traitors as well. Their intention to reclaim their lost empire and stand apart from the warring Imperium was seen as an unacceptable lose of resources by both sides and triggered the large scale invasion of the System. As the number of fighters increased and skirmishes escalated to battles, the Synod was largely forgotten; but they did not forget. Unable to contest against the huge numbers of Astartes and supporting war machines the separatist Mechanicum and their allies withdrew from the field, regrouping and rebuilding in secreted compounds throughout the system. Even as the war raged on around them, they began plotting their counter assault, their last attempt to break free of the yolk of the oppressors. They just needed the right time.
During a lull in the ongoing campaign between the Loyalists and Traitors the Synod struck. Perceived allies and hidden garrisons struck out at the regrouping Imperial forces, ambushing supply lines and striking at soft, unguarded locations far behind the front lines. Weapon caches were raided and medical facilities attacked, even previously compliant civilian populations began harassing the invading troops creating a chaotic miasma in an already war torn system.
Neither of the Imperial factions anticipated such a revolt and certainly had not prepared for it. Garrisons across all of the planets except Baylon and Lagaich came under heavy assault, cut off from reinforcement and suffered extreme losses. Driven into action the war was joined once more, fatigue and attrition becoming a significant factor amongst the invaders, unable to fully rest their forces let alone resupply them in a consistent manner. Unable to trap the Synod forces on the field in a battle of their choosing, many engagements became ploys leading a Traitor offensive into a Loyalist assault and vice versa, while the Synod attacks then struck at the weakened victor to dislodge them from the territory.
The worst hit was Dur-Kazit, the former fortress world of the Synod themselves. Hidden coding protocols overrode the machine spirit of thousands of defense systems and the mighty network surrounding the planet slipped into slumber, leaving the foreign garrisons vulnerable. Both the Loyalists and Synod forces took advantage of the worlds weakened defenses and sent multiple strike forces against the world and its defenders. The Traitors, however, were not ready to relinquish control. While bloody, the Traitors managed to make a stand and retain the vast majority of their holdings on the pivotal world. The same could not be said for other areas however.
Across the system, Imperial holdings were overrun, unable to be reinforced they were forced to retreat and allow the Synod forces to reclaim territory after territory, their own fighters slipping back into the local populace. On Dur-Kazit however the tactic changed; from orbit the defense network began rekindling, not at the Traitors command, but its original makers. Launch platforms began firing stabilizer thrusters, spinning themselves around to face downwards towards the planets surface. For the second time in under a millennium the planet was subjected to an orbital bombardment.
Rad Phage warheads screamed towards the surface while Phosphex air bombs detonated in the atmosphere, turning an already hostile environment into one which rivaled the mythical Terran Hell. Amidst the bombardment the invasions continued, Astartes, human, Machine, all walked upon the world through the green flickering light above while the unseen fires of the Radiation poisoned them. Still the Traitors continued to hold their posts, dying in droves and unyielding in the face of horrendous conditions. Elsewhere in the system the Synods assaults began slackening, their plans had not anticipated such a stalwart Imperial presence, nor one so large. The garrison they had over thrown were slowly reclaimed by one side or another, supply lines began to reestablish and their own resources began to dwindle.
Recognising that their last gasp for air had been taken, the Synod commanders knew that there would be a second Insurrection, they were not going to be withdraw and regroup a second time, this was their death knell and the end of their time. The bombardment of the fortress world escalated, without the ability to reclaim the world, they would remove from the game for all players; vast swathes of the surface became a broiling radiation storm destroying anything in its path and melting the planets surface itself into a corrosive slag, only the most heavily fortified complexes were able to survive and even those were reduced to little more than glorified survival shelters. The anticipated purging of the Imperials from the lesser worlds had not come to pass, while the garrisons were stripped and in many places overrun, they had been reclaimed, leaving only four significant territories in the hands of the native Mechanicum.
Cipaar, Nypour, Uruq and Dur-Kazit each now held a small bastion of the Synod forces, too small to continue the fight outwards, they have dug themselves in, ready for the final killing blow. But all was not lost, the planets populace themselves had seen the resurrection of their once mighty empire and, even momentarily, remembered their lineage, independent to that of the Imperium. While the last bastions of their former empire remain their co-operation with the Imperial invaders would no longer be forthcoming.
On the planets of Kych, Laigach and Baylon though, this last flickering flame had already been extinguished under the harsh foot fall of armoured ceramite boots.
