Description
The Dead Sisters, Kerr and Carmine, are a binary planet: Two planetary bodies that orbit each other around a common center of gravity, as well as around their host star. It is unknown why these two planets were never terraformed or colonized; however, Mechanicus Adepts theorize that the complex gravitational and magnetic fields produced by the orbiting binary made settlement unattractive to the system’s original colonizers.
Though colonization never took hold on Carmine, the Navy's Childriss Defense Fleet found the binary suitable as a base and provisioning station. The orbit of Carmine's sister planet Kerr acts as a natural barrier to any incoming ships, which must slow down and time their entry into the fleet anchorage or risk collision with the transiting binary. This natural defensive advantage makes the Dead Sisters the naval defensive focal point for the entire system. Most personnel view a posting to the OB-P as hardship duty, due to the lack of amenities and recreational activities available at the facility.
