The topography of Corabie consists mostly of flat deserts broken by ranges of rocky hills and low mountains. Vegetation is sparse, small hardy shrubs and ground cover for the most part. Most of the planets water is in underground rivers and aquifers. A handful of oasis across the planet mark the few places where it reaches the surface. Because of the lack of surface water there is almost no native wildlife.

Population

Corabie has a population of 4 Billion, the majority of which are concentrated into three hive cities.

The greatest of these is Hive Castus which has the largest spaceport on the planet, and thus the greatest wealth from interstellar trade. It is home to around 2 billion people as well as all of the travelers and merchants passing though. In addition it is the seat of the Planetary Governor.

The second most influential is Hive Oraldis. It was built up around the planets only natural resource, a massive gold mine. About a Billion souls make their home there. The mine has long since run out, but these days the brokers of Oraldis do a rich trade in banking and money lending. It is said that there is enough money hidden away in Oraldis to buy Castus Hive three times over, if you could weasel it away from its miserly guardians...

The third largest population centre on Corabie is Hive Tertius. Its primary purpose is to maintain the geothermal plants that supply the other two hives with power. Although it is much less prestigious than the other two, it is the main hub of industry, and most of the goods produced on the planet are made there. 600 million people live amongst the smoke stacks and buzzing power plants.

The remainder of the population live in small settlements and private estates dotted all over the planet. A small number of nomads live in the wastes, far away from civilization.

History

Corabie was the first colony founded by Castus Tharr on his journey of exploration into the Nemesis Spiral. The City of Castus Landing served as his primary base for the duration of his expedition. As more and more riches started flowing out of the inner systems back to the imperium, Corabie scooped off its fair share in tariffs and bribes.

After the death of Castus Tharr, his surviving heir settled down on Corabie and it became the capital of the growing subsector. Hundreds of years of prosperous trade swelled Castus Landing into a massive hive, and the cities of Oraldis and Glowstone were founded to take advantage of the natural resources of the planet. Eventually these cities became mighty hives in their own right but by then Corabie had been surpassed by the grandeur of the inner systems. A series of power plays by the trade guilds saw the subsector capital moved to Defos, and Corabie lost its pre-eminance.

In recent times the seclusion of the subsector and the xenos wars have decimated the inner systems, whilst Corabie has escaped relatively intact. However the clearing of the Phonicas warp route means that Corabie has once again become the door to the Helix Cluster, for friend and foe...

First blood

The vanguard of the Helix crusade attacked Hive Tertius in force in an attempt to capture the geothermal generators that supplied Hive Castus. Elements of the Dark Angels, Salamanders, and Death Corp of Krieg led the charge, but were bogged down in the outer districts by the tenacious PDF troops. The armies of the imperium settled in to slowly butcher the PDF until they were suddenly ambushed from an unexpected quarter.

A horde of genestealers burst out of the sewers and maintenance walkways and carved a bloody trail through the invading troops. With the rebels still raining shells on their heads, the imperials were forced to fall back to regroup. Outside the city however, the genestealers were no match for the combined guns of the Space marines and imperial guard, and they quickly fled back inside the city in search of easier prey.

The city remained under rebel control. But with genestealers inside the walls that situation is tenuous at best.
