History
Imperial records indicate that humanity's first recorded encounter with the infectious species known as Genestealers occurred on the moons of Ymgarl circa M35, and the first recorded Genestealer Cult was discovered and purged in M41.
In truth, however, the first Genestealers had been seeded into the galaxy towards the waning years of the Great Crusade. Beyond the jurisdiction of the Imperium, lurking at the edges of the Empire Guilliman had built for himself in Ultramar, the first Genestealers acted with relative impunity.
Free from the viciously-xenocidal mindset that defined the Imperium even in its infancy, the Genestealers found many human-populated planets willing to allow them to exist in the forests and deserts of the worlds they seeded. Taking the outcast and downtrodden of these worlds, the Genestealers followed their biological imperatives and began to spread their corrupt biology to their new worshippers.
The Under-King
One brood of Genestealers found themselves on the feudal hive-world of Ophidia Prime. Given over to production of Ophidia-Pattern Leman Russ Battle Tanks, the planet's lower classes were desperately poor and viciously oppressed.
Operating from the shadows, the Genestealer which would evolve into the bloated Patriarch known as the Under-King infected swathes of these labourers, eventually extending its grasp into the noble houses who rode the Leman Russes into battle.
Ophidia Prime's Armoured Formations proved a most effective method fro spreading the Under-King's influence. Purestrain Genestealers and early-generation Hybrids could hide within the armoured mass of their tanks, emerging only to ensnare a victim and pass along their genetic curse.
In this fashion, the Noble Houses of Ophidia Prime swiftly fell into line, and within two human generations, the entire planet had been either infected or enthralled by the Under-King and its servants. The time was right to expand its reach to the stars above and carry the Genestealer's Kiss to the unsuspecting worlds of Ultima Segmentum.
The arrival of the Imperium to Ophidia Prime occurred three years later, when an Alpha Legion Expeditionary Fleet made contact. Meeting only 4th-Generation Hybrids, the mutations were deemed within acceptable parameters, and the world was classed compliant. As Administratum personnel, remembrancers, and others from across the Imperium flocked to this new world. Those who left spoke fondly of Ophidia's highly courteous and charismatic Nobles, citing the planet as a shining example of all that humanity could be. Many of these personnel retired shortly after their visit, citing a desire to focus on family and friends.
The Horus Heresy
With the Outbreak of the Horus Heresy, everything the Under-King has built came under threat. With civil war erupting across the galaxy, worlds it had seeded were destroyed or rendered unimportant by the vagaries of war and the eruption of Warp Storms across the galaxy.
Knowing that eventually Ophidia Prime would need to choose a side in the expanding conflict, the Under-King sided with the Warmaster, correctly surmising that Horus would take less offence to its existence than any of the Emperor's loyal sons.
Deployed alongside many of the Traitor Legions over the course of the Heresy, the Genestealer Hybrids made excellent shock-troops, able to rip through even the thickest armour and driven by a fanatical devotion to the Under-King.
Lords of the Cult
The Under-King
The first Genestealer to infect one of Ophidia Prime's destitute lower class, the Under-King has become a living icon for its followers. A blur of blades on the battlefield and a cunning strategist, the Under-King pulls the various threads of its many plans from its throne far beneath Ophidia Prime's Capitol Hive.
The Lord-Advisor
The Lord-Advisor is a psychically-active fourth-generation hybrid, and usually speaks for the Under-King when dealing with those outside the Cult. Surrounded by a throng of Heirophants and other psykers, the Lord-Advisor also assists the Under-King in enacting is interplanetary schemes.
