History

The Af'eans were originally an Imperial colony sent out during the Dark Age of Technology. Originally designed to become a host for an industrial world due to the high quantity of rare metals in the soil, it was lost to the Imperium during the age of strife. Those colonists realizing they were on their own and surrounded by Xenos realized the only way to survive was to evolve. Using the most of the STCs they had available, they realized that what currently exists was inefficient and they sought to improve the existing plans. This mindset brought about an age where many technological advancements were made. Excluded from the Imperial influence of what is to become the Mechanicus, technology evolved to better suit the rocky home planet. Along with that technology, mutation took hold changing the inhabitants to better suit the environment. By the time the crusades had begun, the once human inhabitants could no longer be recognized.

Technology

The world was composed of many ravines with great towering grassy plateaus. Tracked vehicles were too slow and the fuel required to maintain flight too difficult to access because of the rocky nature of the planet. The supplies that were readily accessible were being used too quickly as the colonists explored the planet and setup settlements.

The few space faring ships the Af'eans did have, were salvaged for the gravitational wave generators used to maintain something similar to Terra's gravitational force during the long space voyage. These devices were too large to be used in smaller vehicles. It wasn't more than a century or two until a breakthrough was made. The original size of the devices was due to how the energy moved through the machine to create the gravitational waves. Scientists were able to condense the size of the grav wave generators by amplifying the strength of each device so smaller devices could be used. These new designs, while still bulky, were installed on some of the transport vehicles being used. The effect at first was too unstable and required more power then most vehicles could produce consistently. They relied on the wheels or tracks to move but could be enabled for short bursts that would cause the vehicle to jump into the air. The people of Af'ea could now jump over obstacles in their land vehicles allowing them to get to areas previously limited to flying vehicles. As the millennia wore on, the design was enhanced and their vehicles no longer had a need for tracks. Their sleek hulls and aerodynamic designs led to faster lighter vehicles that required less fuel and maintenance.

The construction of skimmer technology was a breakthrough for the people of Af'ea. They were able to shrink the designs more and install them in robots that could be used in tighter spaces and could survive the crushing pressures in the deepest part of the cracks that riddled the planet. People were too fragile and could not survive the pressures of the deepest parts of the planet. Robots, while highly valued, were considered expendable. The colonists were suspicious of robots becoming too self aware and feared they would make people obsolete. Designers limited the capabilities to being commanded by people but could on occasion be given directives with little to no additional information. These robots were labeled drones and quickly became integrated in all aspects of Af'ean culture. Designed for specific tasks, several drones could be linked together to accomplish greater tasks and were often sent to scout for new resources inside ravines and to return samples.

The First Encounter

The Af'eans were able to spread around the planet and colonize much of it. The initial colonists went unnoticed from prying eyes but as buildings rose, and cities developed even their closest celestial neighbors started to take notice. It wasn't until the first rocks crashed into remote parts of the planet that they even knew anyone was watching them. The aliens quickly started taking over the areas around the initial landing site. The colony, designed for manufacturing, was not prepared for a full blown war on their planet. The rudimentary defenses they erected were quickly overrun as the Green Tide swept across the northern part of the planet.

Desperate to eliminate the threat of aliens and to save the colony, drones began to be equipped with various war technologies. Gun drones that could surprise the enemy from any direction. Sniper drones that could carry heavier weapons then the average troop were used to pick off important targets. Tanks had been retrofitted with skimmer tech for use across the planet but weapon technologies were at a standstill. Tanks that had stood still for years zoomed forward to protect the colony, weapons booming. The tide began turning in the colonists favor.

It wasn't long before the colonists, despite stemming the tide, were being worn down by the never ending horde. World leaders came across designs created to allow Af'eans to travel down into the ravines and bring more resources up by controlling specifically designed harvest drones. The experts in the 'suit' design assured them that the plating used to protect the user could survive small arms fire and even protect them against rockets. The approval was given to get some suits equipped with weapons and sent to fight on the front lines. A small handful of the original suits were equipped with ammunition packs, and flamethrowers, it was at this time that a call was received. One of the planets primary manufatorums was under siege and was requesting immediate backup.

The suits were loaded into an aircraft and were sent to break the siege of the manufatorum. By the time the suits were fully operational and through some rudimentary tests, the siege had reached a fevered pitch and if help did not arrive soon it spelled doom for the citizens inside. The last of the militia were readied to provide backup to the untested suits, the attack would occur at dawn. When the sun rose on the last day of the siege the horde woke to the sound of aircraft passing low overhead. The anti aircraft weapons lit up the sky as the Af'ea aircraft screamed overhead dropping the new suits onto the battlefield. They plummeted down at breakneck speed. Only at the last minute once below the fire arcs of the anti aircraft guns, did they trigger the jet-packs originally installed to enable navigation inside the ravines. The fell from the sky on wings of fire and unleashed a rage on the horde unseen since the beginning of the war. The defenders opened up with everything they had available. The suits crashed into the ground spewing bullets and fire everywhere. Wading through the destruction as Orks tried to get close enough to rip them apart. The veterans who were quickly taught to use the suits were not likely to let their brothers and sisters fight the horde alone and no Ork got close enough to even spit as the suits rampaged through the Ork besiegers lines. The crisis averted, a raggedy cheer went up from the defenders. The suit pilots hailed as heroes were quickly requested to other battle fields where the horde was dug in and couldn't be broken. The manufactorum were tasked with creating more of the dubbed "Crisis suits". They quickly became a status icon and only the most respected members of the military were able to pilot one.

It wasn't long after this that other designs sprang up for artillery suits and even scout suits. Certain designs were approved while others were not. By the end of the decade long war, the Af'eans had suits for a variety of war related tasks. The Orks refusing to flee fought to the last but were eventually expunged from the planet. Unfortunately the Af'eans had no way to counter another threat from space. They feared what else was out there. The race to rebuild their space ships to protect the planet had begun.

The race to expand

After the first encounter with aliens the Af'eans believed they had to put aside their individual desires to better the whole. Individual desires were repressed in favor of a 'Greater Good'. It was around this time that individuals arose that were natural born leaders. They could inspire their brothers and sisters to do feats they themselves thought impossible. This new group of leaders instilled a drive within the colony. A drive to expand into space and claim their rightful place among the stars. They could not let another war like the first war to occur again. They needed to protect themselves and as was their duty, protect others for the greater good of their space empire.

Great space ships were commissioned. The technology originally used to get them to Af'ea was replicated with the advanced technology that had developed since the first colonists had landed. The space ships were designed faster, with better armor, and were armed with experimental weapons called 'Rail-guns' that required no fuel and could reach speeds faster then even their largest guns. Tests showed that these weapons could be used to punch through even the toughest armor.

The energy required to get these ships into space was so great that no power-cell or reactor technology available was powerful enough to fuel the ship through space. In the decades it took to build the first ships brought about changes in fusion technology and the invention of dark matter reactors. These reactors could be used to produce incredible amounts of energy. These were thought enough to power the numerous grav generators that would lift the ships into space, power their shields, and even the new warp drive that would take them to systems beyond their own.

While the colonial ships were being built, the research into new weapons and armor system never ceased. Scientists feared what they might find in the void of space. So much so, they pushed the limits of suit technology. Creating smaller reactors that could be used to power the suit and provide a near endless supply of energy to its weapons. The changes in fusion technology made accessing the energy required to produce plasma more available. Weapons were created that could produce propelled bolts of plasma. With a small amount of physical fuel that was then turned to plasma, they created weapons that could be used by suits, as well as by troops. These pulse weapons, as they came to be known, were stronger then solid projectiles but what they had in strength they lacked in piercing power. The versatility of the pulse weapons was proven time and time again in tests and slug weapons were eventually retired from normal troop use.

By the time the ships were complete, the population was booming and troops had been groomed. The first of the expansion colonies were ready to be sent out. Scanners that were left from the time of the first colonists, as well as improvements made over the years revealed a system that had an abundant supply of resources and optimal conditions to sustain life. The leaders dubbed this system "Alentos". It is here the Af'eans would find out if they can survive out in the void of space, or if their time was up before it even started...
