Compliance

Istonia was a human colony that was returned to the Imperium by a scouting force of the 3,855th Expeditionary Force in 972.M30. The compliance force was drawn from the XVII Legionnes Astartes, The Word Bearers. The Istonian system consisted of 6 planets orbiting a yellow dwarf star, not unlike Sol. Unusually however, the two colonised planets both shared an orbital path, approximately 155 degrees out of phase. in the Goldilocks zone, Istonian Prime & Jaxal. These planets had maintained contact during the Age of Strife using sub-light technology, and each had developed into a military-industrial powerhouses. This was primarily due to the drive that the existing political ruling class had instilled; with the leader of each planet simultaneously claiming the other was planning an invasion. This political fear-mongering led to a down-trodden and compliant populace, but a surprisingly strong defence force on both planets.

When the Expeditionary force made translation in system they immediately noted the level of technological advancement was comparable to the wider Imperium; this was attributed to (correctly it turned out) the presence of common STC technology. With the lessons of Monarchia still burning fresh in their memories the Word Bearers needed to bring the system to compliance quickly and continue the Great Crusade. However, the Word Bearers force in the 3,855th was comparatively small, consisting of the 412th Company of approximately 2000 Legionnaires. Expedition Commander, Captain Tyr Qroka recognized that they alone didn't have the strength to bring the system to compliance by conventional force of arms. A message of welcome was broadcast to both planets and the fleet approached high anchor over Jaxal. The message contained details of the Imperium of Mankind, and the citizens of the Istonian System's new place in it. The only response the fleet received was incoming fire from the orbital and ground based defenses of Jaxal.

With time and resources against them, Qroka made an almost unprecedented decision; while the destroyers and frigates neutralized the orbital defenses, Qroka's flagship unleashed a full barrage of cyclonic torpedoes upon Jaxal. Such decisions had been made before, but never without express permission from a Primarch or the Emperor himself. Life on Jaxal was effectively ended 3.75 terran hours after the Jaxalian's fired their first shot.

This overwhelming display of force was followed by a second message to Istonia, this time demanding an immediate, full surrender of Istonian forces. The government complied and Expeditionary officials including Qroka, his honour guard, Imperial administrators and Rememberancers were welcomed with open arms. The general population saw the Word Bearers as heroic saviours from the Jaxalian menance; the ruling class saw their power evaporate immediately. Over the next few months analysis of system data revealed to the Word Bearers, who in turn informed the public, the abuses their overlords had been inflicting. The ruling aristocracy were permanently removed from power, and administrators, who had accompanied the Expedition from Colchis, were installed as planetary leaders. This bought about great joy in the populace, who swore their loyalty to the XVII Legion rather than the Imperium at large. The fleet left and life on Istonia continued productively for the next 30 years.

Heresy

When the Word Bearers returned to Istonia in 005.M31 to raise Militia, the Istonian's were ready, willing and able. The infrastructure had been established long before compliance, along with the tradition of military service. With 30 years of 'guiding' by Colchisian advisors there were 12 fanatically devoted divisions (approximately 200,000 soldiers) awaiting transport to fight with the Word Bearers.

The Istonian divisions headed for the Ultima segmentum, ostensibly toward the Calth Muster; although several divisions were positioned strategically around the Five Hundred Worlds. It is estimated that approximately 100,000 Istonian soldiers fought in and around Numinous City during the Calth atrocity. The units deployed to Calth's surface suffered horrendous casualties or were destroyed entirely, either in the fighting or in the radioactive aftermath of the Veridian star tragedy.

One unit to make an escape from Calth's surface was the 102nd. Relatively large numbers managed to board escaping dropships as the star started poisoning the planet's atmosphere. They cut this so fine that the Company's armored elements, which were loaded last, did receive a moderate dose of radiation, which by chemical quirk caused a reaction that resulted in a greatly increased rate of oxidation; it is from this phenomena that the Company drew it's current cognomen, The Brothers of Rust.

The 102nd, along with less complete remnants of other units, have continually been seen fighting alongside the Word Bearers and World Eaters as part of the Shadow Crusade in the Five Hundred Worlds. Imperial Forces have estimated that there are still somewhere in the region of 60,000 Istonian's still operational, arrayed in forces ranging from a few hundred to understrength division size.
