Although not as lush as its smaller namesake, Kildrech Prime was a prosperous world with a rich ecosystem as well as vast mineral resources, a near perfect balance of rich industry and comfortable environment. It was for this reason that the planet was chosen to be the System capital above the other candidates who may have a more appealing climate or more abundant natural resources.

While the Tyranid invasion crippled the planets fauna and flora it was not as a complete decimation as Kildrech Minor. A stable atmosphere is still present and there is limited plant life scattered across the surface, although there are large tracts of utter desolation.

Population

Although scattered, the planet has a significant imperial population, mostly located in underground hab zones away from the harsh surface and thin atmosphere. Prodiminantly miners, there is still a large section of the populace who support the countries trading and administrative activities, ensuring that the planet remains the systems Capital.

History

Once the centre piece of a grand Templar Crusade on the eastern fringe shortly after the formation of the Black Templars, Kildrech Prime became a powerful trade and military hub in its own right. Under the firm administration and guidance of the zealot Astartes and supplied by the Mechanicus Forge World of Cerberus the System Capital grew from strength to strength. As the Astranomican withdrew though, so did the planets connection with the rest of the Imperium. By the time the Tyranid invasion occurred the planets, along with the entire system, was isolated and forgotten.

Although devastated by the Xenos attack, the planet was not utterly destroyed. A thin atmosphere remained and some of the more rugged plant and animal life also endured. Over the centuries this limited flora and fauna has spread and evolved, creating a resiliant, if somewhat sparse, eco system across the dark terrain. Likewise the people endured; taking to underground habs, fortified spires and continuing the professions of old, mining and trade. While the human population remained, its leadership and governors changed from time to time including Xenos races using the planet for their own needs.

Early in 900M41 an Imperial Guard expeditionary force made up of the 84th Vengeance and 31st Brimlocks entered the system in response to increased Xenos raiding activity in the neighbouring Systems. Tasked with seeking out and clearing fringe worlds of Xenos presence, the Kildrech System was the first major planetary system past Phonicas and was currently under the control of a Xenos collective. The pursuing events led to the declaration of the Kildrech Crusade and the eventual reclaimation of the planet by Templar forces.
