History

Chapter Founding

The 31st is an old chapter. Founded by the Emperor himself during the Unification Wars on Ancient Terra as the 31st Company, 1st Legion. Chapter Master Avinos Rodriguez is of Terran stock, and even now, centuries later, most of his Chapter are Terran born. They fought right through the Unification Wars, playing an integral part in bringing the Panpacific Empire into the Imperial fold, eliminating the crazed Monari Dume, nephew of the Tyrant, and his 10,000 elite foot soldiers and bodyguards, known locally as the Murderfiends. For this feat of arms, the Emperor personally commended the 31st Company.

Early Great Crusade

Their Roll of Honor is long, and they fought with valor throughout the early years of the Great Crusade as part of the 42nd Expeditionary Fleet, bringing many planets to Compliance along side their embedded Imperial Army unit, the 13th company, 212nd Terran Army Group, the "Lucky 13's". One notable compliance was of the Selangor System. Although the majority of habitable planets and moons were overrun by orkoid masses, Selangor III was no normal human held world. Selangor III was a Knight World. House Acoma, although small compared to some Knightly Houses, could still bring to bear enough firepower to keep the Orks at bay. A stalemate of sorts had formed over the system during the later centuries of the Old Night, where even the combined might of several Ork warbosses was not enough to threaten House Acoma, but House Acoma lacked the resources to do anything more than hold the orks at bay, and liberating the system as a whole was an impossibility.

This all changed when a destroyer patrol from the 42nd expeditionary fleet translated in system on a routine scouting mission. Within minutes of arriving their comms channels were barraged by orky chanting, and they were about to translate back into the warp when a solitary human voice came though on just a single frequency. The message was brief, a repeating request for help, coming from the systems 3rd planet. House Acoma, after a long period of isolation during the Long Night, had finally been reunited with mankind. Chapter Master Avinos was quick to divert the fleet, and with the 1st legion went to war. Supported by the Knights of House Acoma, ork warband after ork warband was utterly destroyed. In a relentless campaign of annihilation, the Dark Angel liberated every planet, moon and asteroid in the system, eliminating the ork threat for good. High King Logan of House Acoma swore to help defend the honor of the Dark Angels, and his Knights have marched to battle along side the 31st every since.

Reunion

It was not long after the Selangor campaign that the Legion was finally reunited with their gene-father, Lion El'Johnson. The celebrations ran long into the night, and after finally meeting his Primarch, it is said of Avinos that the Lion, on hearing on the 31st's war record, bade him to join him at the head of his table and toasted the bravery of his sons in the 31st. Avinos was well impressed by the aura of command and capability that the Lion possessed and found quickly that the Primarch had won over not only himself, but the entirety of the 31st.

If the 31st meeting with their gene-father could not have gone better, the same could not be said when the company was introduced to their new Calabanite battle brothers from The Order. Although there bravery and prowess was undeniable, the 31st were Terrans, and found a lot of the practices ritualistic and archaic. When this led to tension between those that should be brothers, the Lion, in his wisdom, decided that the Great Crusade must go on, and entreated Avinos to go forth and bring as many worlds into the Imperial fold as possible, and to bring further glory to the 1st Legion.

Betrayal

And so it was that the 42nd Expeditionary Fleet left Caliban. Avinos, and the newly renamed 31st "Chapter", set course for the galactic north-east, and it was in this region that the 31st was constantly pushing back the frontiers of the Imperium, when word reached of the horrors inflicted on the Istvaan System, and the betrayal of the Warmaster, Horus Luperacal.
