'''Background'''

At the time of the Heresy the Emperor's children XVI company, under the command of Captain Regis, fell in line with their beloved Primarch, and although at first troubled by the act the soon took to the pleasures of the 'purging' at Istvaan III. Joining the Primarch their newfounded assault doctrines proved vital on Istvaan V, providing a strong centre to the Primarch's glorious counter assault against the Iron hands. Notably after this show of martial prowess the XVI gained the much loved respect of the Fulgrim, and indeed many of the company were in range to witness the beautiful destruction of the Gorgon and his horrific bodyguard. After Istvaan the XVI took to their own campaign, attacking Imperial worlds at will in order to spread the newfound teachings of the Warmaster in his crusade against the Oppressive Emperor.

The XVI company is an ad-hoc force, comprising of the remains of the 8th Millennial of the Emperor's Children. Under the orders of the Primarch Fulgrim the Millennial had been dispatched to the Terion System alongside Imperial Army support in order to bring the worlds into the Imperial fold. However what was thought to be a peaceful, if archaic system turned out to be under the control of a form of unknown psychic Xenos. With enemy armies controlled by these shady figures similar to a hive mind, the Emperor's Children found themselves fighting a protracted campaign against an unforgiven force that inflicted heavy attrition on the Imperial Forces. It would be 5 Terran years before the fourth and final planet in the system had been brought under Imperial rule, and the Emperor's children had lost no less than 15% of their Legionnaires, whilst the Imperial Army suffered roughly 40% casualties. During this period of isolation, the mood of the 8th Millennial had shifted to one of deep cynicism, criticism of the Warmaster and the Great Crusade was spoken of in hushed tones  in the Officer's lodge, and amongst the Imperial Army campaign fatigue had settled in, with many forces requesting colony rights in the new system - something vehemently denied by civilian administrators.

Not long after Istvaan, the company underwent a major shift in command, during which a young marine by the name of Ilya Sebastian took advantage of the 'duel for promotion' concept introduced by Regis and killed his way to the very top of te command tree - inducting himself as the Lord-Captain of the XVI. As his first act Sebastian immediately overhalued the promotions system that he had abused - preventing any others from opposing him. With a core cadre of dedicated or plain insane centurions to support him, Sebastian 'purged' the Company a second time and made it truly his own. Sebastian became and still continues to be the Lord-Captain, a position he has now held for technically over 10,000 years.

It was then with great pleasure Lord Commander Sebastian received news of an approaching Emperor's Children fleet fresh from the Istvaan System, bringing the news of the Primarch's latest deeds. When the fleet arrived it hailed the 8th  Millennial as brothers in arms and it was agreed a great mustering would take place on the planet of Terion Primus. As the new boarded their landing craft, the 8th Millennial arrayed its full might in the planetary capital below, some 1700 Legionnaires, supported by thousands of Imperial Army men and war machines, their armour polished and repaired, banners weighed down with battle honours. At the head of these massed ranks stood Lord Commander Sebastian and his Officers, facing forward to meet their arrivals.

By the time the company were to reach Terra there had been a considerable change. No longer a united company of legionnaires but instead a company of hedonistic, individualist, swordmasters they nevertheless banded together for the Primarch, who they had not been in the presence of since Istvaan. However this loyalty was soon disbanded upon viewing what had become of their beloved leader, the horrific form that he had taken disgusted so many of the company, a disgust that climaxed when Fulgrim became bored of the Palace siege and instead moved away from combat to enjoy the massacre of civilian populace. Such a monumental show of, what the Company considered, cowardice in the face of beautiful combat led the XVI to reswear their loyalty to the Warmaster and to the Company themselves as opposed to Fulgrim's perversions of their once perfect Legion. The XVI would proceed to fight the rest of the siege alongside their brothers of the Iron Warriors (who were always happy to aid an enemy of Fulgrim).

Except what emerged from the landing storm eagles was no longer their brothers. Filthy, deformed, corrupt marines strolled out of opening doors, the stench of perfume rolling along the ground like phosphex. The leader of this force, a Centurion by the name of Allois swaggered at the head of his force. As more drop ships disgorged ranks of traitor legionnaires Allois approached Sebastian, greeting him as a battle brother. Whilst exact words cannot be remembered, the events remain fixed in time. As he was regaled with the story of Istvaan; the murder of his brothers on Istvaan III and the betrayal on Istvaan V, the Lord Commander was filled with a great rage, and beheaded the treacherous Allois on the spot, cutting short the torrent of apparent lies. Refusing to believe the fall of his beloved Primarch and Legion, Sebastian was suddenly rocked to the core as the arriving force retaliated to the death of their commander en masse, cutting down the 8th's Legionnaires where they stood. The ensuing battle was vicious and bloody, and many of the 8th were slaughtered still in their ranks, as companies attempted to organise reaction to the enemy attacks. After nearly twenty hours of fighting the last of the enemy had been eliminated, and their ships either destroyed or immobilised. The heresy had come to the 8th Millennial, and it had torn them asunder. From its starting 2000 Legionnaires and 200 armoured vehicles there now remained around 800 men and 60 machines, whilst its army support by this stage stood at around 20% of its starting size.

After the failure at Terra what was left of the XVI never returned to the warp, but instead to the outer reaches (although based off current theoretical age of members, most agree that the company has found some method of transgressing time). Now a faction all to themselves their desire for both beauty and combat has begun to attract the attention of both Khorne and Slaanesh, although the outright worship of any god has yet to be seen within the XVI. Operations of the Company consist mostly of raids against Imperial worlds, or indeed anywhere they particularly choose. So long as they can feel the rush of adrenaline and hear the screams of their foes up close - the XVI don't care who they attack. A particular hatred does however still exist for those of their old legion, and whenever possible the XVI seek to destroy the horrific forms that were once their brothers in arms.
+
Shattered, broken, but not defeated Lord Commander Sebastian Rallied and reorganised his forces into a cohesive fighting unit, assembling the Astartes into the 16 independent battle companies, each outfitted to fight on its own or as part of a larger operation. With this change Sebastian also introduced the new name 'XVI Company' as a show of separation from their old roots and fallen legion. During this period of reorganisation reports slowly leaked into the system of the wider galaxy at war, and the Officer's soon fell around discussing just where the company's loyalties lay. Their Legion, at the Warmaster who commanded them, were denounced as traitors and betrayers, however the Imperium was referred to as the unwanted taskmaster, who had driven the legionnaires and men into the meatgrinder with no reward or respect. Fears were also raised that, as Sebastian refused to remove the purple and gold livery, their forces may be labelled traitors by their more zealously loyal brothers. So the company founded their own independent Imperium, a system of planets governed by Legionnaires as a military dictatorship that fuel and supply the XVI operations against their enemies - whoever they may be.

'''Ideology'''

In the XVI the nature of perfection has been taking to a different level, shunning the brutal and dishonourable tactics of the III Company and their Kakophanie, the XVI have followed a path of perfection through personal glory. Swordmanship and hand to hand combat are the primary focus of all members, from the lowest legionnaire to the captain himself. Weekly tournaments and combat games are held even during planetary campaigns, in order to determine the elite members of each Century and the Company as a whole. On top of this Legionnaire have been actively pushed towards personalised wargear and emblems, with backbanners for just about every marine in the company, in order to further determine the personal glory of each marine. To refuse a challenge as a member of the XVI is one of the highest dishonours one can achieve, and the officer in question is immediately removed from his position pending reassignment. Only the best may be given the honour of leading and the officers lodge of the XVI takes no excuse for failing to prove oneself on the field of battle.

On the battlefield this has led to a most brutal form of warfare. Tactical teams with Imperial Army support will hold a battleline and provide suppressing/distracting fire until the main force arrives. After key positions in the enemy's forces are located, the first wave of drop pods arrives from the Gloria - dropping Valentine's terminators to locations where they can do the most damage, their menagerie of weapon's and combat styles coping with all opponents. The second wave of drop pods brings the rest of the company, who drop almost straight in front of the enemy in their rush to achieve greatness in front of the legion. The following butchery is swift and deadly, combat units of Assault teams moving to intercept and destroy any units that survived the second wave, whilst the Company's armoured support provides almost picturesque armoured cavalry changes against their opponents, heavy usage of melta based weaponry providing plenty of damage at the close ranges.

The XVI also seek a separate form of beauty, that of personal looks. This has led to hedonism and narcissism throughout its ranks, something that only spurs on the continuing inter company fighting. Continual operations and skin changes are made, with the Legion's apothecaries becoming almost plastic surgeons as well as standard medics (and bloodied butchers). Each individual sees beauty separately though, and consequently there has grown thousands of individual styles and looks throughout the Company, each man seeking to distinguish himself from his battle brothers - indeed it is noted the only similarities many still share is that their armour retain the original legion colours - following the common boasting of the company's longstanding history.

'''Composition'''

XVI company, whilst on the outbreak of the Heresy a balanced force, has now become solely focused on the hand to hand engagement of their opponents. To this extent barely a few standard tactical squads remain and are sometimes used when necessary to hold down positions. Instead any and all who could became part of jump pack or drop pod assault teams, with 50 of such 10 man squads make up the core of the company. Several brothers of the Palantine blades have also thrown their support to the XVI and have helped to train and induct several new members; their desire for personal glory and perfection of swordsmanship driving them to bloody ends on the field, inspiring others to achieve in order to join their ranks. Along with these has come 4 terminator teams, whom form the eite core of the 16th, their winged banners and heavily personalised armour providing the vanguard of the assault waves. At present their are two dreadnoughts, both of whom are ex-centurions and both of whom prefer to the use of drop pods and close combat weapons to the outfits of more ranged based forces. The Company command, whilst once an outfit of perfected command and control is now filled with Sebastian's personal chosen, including the feared Squad-Captain Aenus and Sebastian's 'pet' noise marines. When deployed to the field Sebastian and his command squad usually head up the assault waves - always enjoying the first taste of enemy blood.

The Company is also in command of several armoured vehicles, ranging from Rhinos and drop pods to a lone fellblade that constitutes as Centurion Castellus' personal command vehicle of armoured elements. As before mentioned many of these vehicles are equipped with melta or other short ranged weaponry, designed to have maximum effect at minimum range. Many tank commanders have also taken to equipping their vehicles with ramming spikes and other brutal frontages - for the added thrill when tank shocking enemy infantry units.
