History

The 67th Chapter of the VII Legio Astartes, known as "The Scions of the Crusade" had arrived in the Australis Ultima Sector only one and a half years prior to the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. Sent by Lord Dorn and under the command of Marshal Battuta, the 67th had the primary mission of recruiting the next generation of Imperial Fists for many of the far-flung companies operating in expeditionary fleets through Ultima Segmentum. The plan was to draw recruits from a series of worlds in the Australis Ultima sector that had been tithed temporarily to the VII Legio and then deploy them as initiates against Ork threats which remained in the sector. The bulk of the Astartes of the Chapter not assigned to training duties would be erecting fortifications on many of border worlds.

Supplied primarily for training missions and fortification, the 67th was only minimally equipped with heavy armor and specialist weapons. Still, the 67th numbered over 800 Astartes when it arrived in the Australis Ultima sector, and an impressive fleet detachment including the battle-barges Rihla and Terra Ascendant as well as several strike cruisers and associated frigates, freighters, and supply ships.

The 67th had a long history of recruiting and training generations of Imperial Fists. Throughout the Crusade, the 67th would stay behind on conquered worlds which had potential to serve as recruitment worlds and establish training-fortresses. Often, a single squad would remain behind to continue the recruitment process. Dozens of such fortress remain in the wake of the 67th Chapter and whichever Expeditionary Fleet it was attached to.

Marshal Battuta

This focus was not an accident. Marshal Batutta, Praetor of the 67th Chapter, is heralded as one of the greatest trainers of the VII Legio Astartes. Rising to his first captaincy near the end of the Terran Wars, Battuta was present the day Lord Dorn met the Emperor over Inwit. He remained in the Inwit cluster for years, integrating the newly recruited aspirants into the VII Legio Astartes. As the Great Crusade accelerated, Battuta, now holding the title of Castellan, was given command of a newly formed company made up of Astartes he had recruited and trained, and was brought to serve directly under Lord Dorn. Dorn recognized Battuta's gift for recognizing talent and assigned him to the task of maintaining the Imperial Fists' future.

He was given overall command of the 67th Chapter in 001.M31. The newly minted Marshal Battuta was directed by Lord Dorn to continue establishing fortresses and growing the Legio.

Remembrancers have noted that Marshal Battuta is possibly the most well traveled Astartes in the Legions. He traveled from Terra to Inwit, to the far reaches of the Halo Stars, to the Eastern Fringe. He was involved with 23 first contact encounters with (and subsequent destruction of) various xenos species. He personally secured bloodless compliance with 43 human systems and oversaw the forced compliance of 18 more human systems.

Australis Ultima System

The 67th arrived in Australis Ultima near the end of 004.M31. Lord Dorn had instructed Marshal Battuta to fortify the border worlds and recruit and train an additional 1200 Astartes who would reinforce the Chapters depleted in the recent campaigns against multiple xenos threats on the Eastern Fringe.

Marshal Battuta established several fortresses on less developed worlds in the sector and drew recruits from these worlds as well. The Rihla served as a mobile training base and site of much of the Apothecarion. Once initiates were deemed fit by Battuta himself (and only 1 in 200 were), they were transferred to Terra Ascendant and its accompanying fleet for deployment to get much needed combat experience against Ork concentrations and Space Hulks in the sector.

Operating at the fringes of the sector, the 67th only had limited contact with other VII Legio taskforces in the area or Lord Dorn. Therefore, when the massacre at Istvaan V occurred and Lord Dorn issued a recall to all VII Legio forces to Terra, the 67th did not receive this order. The war against the Orks and the creation of new Astartes continued unabated. By the time of the Battle for Cambrius Minor in 006.M31, the 67th had expanded from roughly 800 Astartes to 1200 with a substantial initiate pool in the tens of thousands. The 67th did have a handful of engagements against Traitor forces, but no major battles prior to their engagement in the Second Golloch War.
