History

Were it not for the far larger horror of the Heresy, the actions of this unit would have gone down in infamy. Death Guard apothecaries were assigned to develop bioweapons that could be deployed ahead of the Legion attack, and they excelled in cultivating virulent diseases and xenos parasites in captured human prisoners. Released into barracks, refugee camps or conurbations, these plagues could cripple a defender's forces and morale. Even worse, the unit was known to release infected prisoners - men, women, and children - and herd them ahead of the Death Guard's battleline. On more then one occasion the Loyalist defenders broke and fled at the sight of the screaming victims, bodies erupting with parasitic fungi or oozing ulcers, rather than linger to put them out of their misery.

The Rise and Fall of Sebb de la Quess

Sebb de la Quess, one of the Master Apothecaries assigned to the biowarfare unit, was originally of Terran origin. Unlike many of his fellow Terrans, marked for death in the initial betrayal at Istvaan, de la Quess was firmly loyal to his master Mortarion, and was confident enough in the results of his work to request assignment to the Golloch theater of war, and particularly the SEC Idre Anchorage orbital.

This proved his undoing. The battles to seize the data-vaults on the orbital were completely inconclusive, even after the Primarch, frustrated by the lack of progress, became personally involved. De la Quess was blamed for this failure, despite his insistence that it was Alpha Legion forces that disrupted the attack. None of these 'Golloch Ghosts' were ever caught, and the Alpha Legion flatly denied that any of their number were active around Hestia. The apothecary was 'volunteered' for a suicide mission into the atmosphere of the gas giant below, pursuing the few crumbs of data the Legion was able to salvage from the Anchorage, but it is unknown if he survived the action.

The Test-beds of Sterith Prime

Despite this blow to their status, First Captain Calas Typhon interceded on the Unit's behalf, persuading the Primarch that Unit 137 could still prove its worth on the refugee-choked planet of Sterith Prime. With so many refugees, from so many worlds, it made an ideal test population. The worst pathogens the Death Guard had devised could be unleashed, to run rampant across a helpless populace. Typhon convinced his master that the resulting pandemics would be usefully employed during the final siege of Terra, and with Mortarion's approval, the people of Sterith Prime were doomed.
