History

Sebkay understood why the Wolves were here. He did not understand the chain of events that had led them there. Surely Magnus knew? All about him his men died. They died for him. They died for Truth. They died for the Emperor. Most of all, they died for Magnus. Magnus; their all knowing father, son of the Emperor of Mankind.

For the first time in his long, trans-human life, Sebkay had doubts. A week ago it would have been inconceivable that the Emperor was wrong. A week ago it was inconceivable that Magnus was wrong. How can these things both be true? Sebkay was a true born son of Terra. He had once, long ago, fought in the presence of the leader of all humanity. His loyalties lay there, his trust; before brotherhood, before his Legion. The Emperor would lead humanity into the golden future. Magnus must be wrong. He would not be cast from the Emperor’s graces. He must return to Terra, with his men, and make amends for the actions of his Legion and his father.

Sebkay could feel the titanic struggle between the Wolf King and his father several kilometres away. All of his senses told him that the battle was coming to a close. They also told him that Magnus was not wholly committed to the fight with his brother, that he was playing with him, using him as part of some larger plan. He could feel power rising from the centre of Tizca, a psychic crescendo that would soon wash over them all. He recognised the feel of the First Captain in his mind, and could see the same recognition in the mind of those men around him. Sebkay understood. The Chief Librarian was attempting to spirit them away, using the psychic potential that Magnus was siphoning from the Wolf King and his men. Sebkay laughed at the irony.

His doubt turned to stony determination. Sebkay and the remnants of the 7th Fellowship would not follow the Ahzek Ahriman and Magnus. The majority of the Legion pitied the 7th for their supposedly lower psychic mastery, but what they did not see was the psychic web that bound the 7th together like no other Fellowship. They may not possess the bombastic abilities of some of the other Fellowships, but they knew each other. They knew each others minds, abilities, goals and desires. Their time away from the majority of the Legion had bonded them emotionally and psychically. Since the death of Phael Toron, Sebkay had become the nexus for that web. He was linked to each of his men, and they were linked to him.

Only partially conscious of the process, Sebkey drew on the gestalt psychic potential of his men and tapped into the power being generated by Magnus and Ahriman. The power was immense. No mortal mind could hold the power that was flowing from Magnus through Ahriman. Sebkay was considered powerful amongst his peers, but even the fraction of Ahriman’s power was burning away his mind. Using the last of his might he altered Ahriman’s spell and cascaded it through his men. If he had done his work well Ahriman would never know. If he had not, they would all die at the hands of the Wolves. Thankfully Ahriman’s efforts reached their peak and the galaxy flashed to white.

Sometime later, Sebkey awoke. He did not know how much later. He could not sense the time. He panicked; he could not sense anything. His manipulation of the vast amounts of warp energy had burned away his psychic potential. He was dull. He was blind. He was… lucky to be alive. Gathering his remaining senses he looked about him. He saw steel bulkheads. He saw the signs of recent battle. He saw a great wolf’s head stencilled onto a bulkhead. Finally he saw his brothers.
