History

The Chapter of the Sacred Lore were formed on Colchis at the command of Kor Phaeron. Initially, the chapter spent several years within a newly built stronghold called the Fortress of the Enlightened Prophet. The Fortress was built on the site of an ancient keep, the catacombs and underground complex now in use by the Chapter and incorporated into the new Fortress.

The Chapter was initially charged with keeping much of the lore of Colchis and the Imperium and ensuring this was communicated and integrated to newly acquired worlds. Kor Phaeron accompanied the chapter on a number of occasions before assigning full control over to the upper circle, including the Chapter Praetor, Balanthian Kal and Chaplain Surla Mol.

Following Isstvan III, Erebus spent much time with Surla Mol and so began the corruption and involvement of the Chapter in the Heresy. The Chapter remained splintered for almost a year, whilst Balanthian Kal led a continued advancement outside of the influence of Erebus, performing the normal duties and expeditions of the Word Bearers. However, Surla Mol was under intense training and teachings from Erebus and commanded a separate detachment of the Chapter, during the period of Isstvan V. It was only during the initial phases at Calth, that the two elements of the Chapter were brought together again. Balanthian’s involvement with the betrayal had been more subtle and simply believed Horus to be on the true righteous path. By the time he and Surla were reunited, their viewpoints were almost identical and the Chapter was back as one once again.

Whilst the Chapter was whole, there were still two factions in operation. Surla had advanced from standard Legion protocols and structure, having incorporated units of Gal Vorbak and already meddled in the warp and daemon summoning. Balanthian remained true to the Legion organisation, and his loyal commanders and legionaries had chosen to keep their initial grey armour in preference to the red of the units led by Surla.

The two factions fought briefly on Calth against the Ultramarines, suffering very few casualties. Erebus contacted Surla not long after fighting had begun and before the cataclysmic event had taken place, informing that the entire Chapter was required elsewhere. It was this act of evacuation which ensured the survival of the Chapter, saving them from the same fate as their brothers from other Chapters when the events leading to the Ruinstorm took place.

The fleet departed from the Ultramar system and gathered in an area of silence space, away from conflict, whilst Erebus and Surla discussed their next mission and purpose. The road ahead was to be tough and would tax the Chapter to the limits. Several locations had been identified from intelligence as way points for various loyalist Legions, most notably the Raven Guard and Imperial Fists.
