Detachments of the Chapter have since been sighted accompanying Erebus and other central command staff of the legion. This may be related to Chapter's propensity to produce Chaplaincy candidates and their utter dedication to Lorgar Aurelian and the XVII Legion. They have most recently been sighted participating in the Shadow Crusade on numerous of the Five-Hundred Worlds continuing to wreak havoc, sow terror and exalt the pantheon at any opportunity. Their appearance is often in conjunction with the Vakrah Jal or the Word Bearer's mysterious, and devastating, 'daemonic' allies.

History

The Chapter of the Profaned Menhir are a long standing formation within the Word Bearers, dating back to the Crusade, Imperial Herald era. Named for a constellation in the skies of Colchis thought to be an ill omen or associated with bad luck, the Chapter was relatively small, consisting of only six companies and was primarily equipped as an mass infantry assault force, although they did possess limited quantities of specialist equipment.

Throughout the Great Crusade the Chapter earned a solid, if not outstanding reputation as part of the 712th Expeditionary Force. Their actions are notable in the frequency of unforeseeable complications they encountered. This almost always resulted in a higher than anticipated casualty rate among the Chapter's companies. Legion Command however, aware of the importance of the 712th's work readily replaced these losses so the Chapter was rarely significantly understrength for any length of time.

The continued ill luck however was thought by many of the Colchisians accompanying the Expeditionary Force to be a related to the naming of the Chapter after such an ominous constellation. However, little did the humans see the larger picture of the events involving the Profaned; many of the dark clouds had a silver lining. An unforeseeable tectonic shift swallows half of the 3rd Company, but reveals an ancient, forgotten forge from the Dark Age of Technology resulting in the recovery of a complete, functional STC template. Post censure, an Eldar fleet arrives unexpectedly by means unknown to ambush the 712th. Again, high casualties are taken repelling the xenos, but capture and interrogation of Eldar officers reveals high value intelligence (forwarded to Legion Command: ref: 'She who thirsts').

Also notable regarding the Chapter are the number of Legionaries inducted into the Ashen Circle formation and to assessment and training for the Chaplaincy. The result of this is that each of the Chapter's Chaplains almost continually having and training a disciple which has, in turn, has lead to the Chapter having incredibly strong spiritual leadership and dedication to the Word Bearers cause.

The Chapter of the Profaned Menhir first came to wider Imperial awareness in the wake of the Calth atrocities where recent analysis of pict-captures show they operated alongside the Chapters of the Unspeaking and The Graven Star. The Profaned participated in the Battle of Ithraca where they supported the Calaq War Host after their true intentions were revealed, and rampaged through Ithraca city participating in the wholesale, indiscriminant slaughter of both loyalist forces and citizenry. Following this action they withdrew from the surface before culmination of the poisoning of the Veridian star.
