Company Battle Cry "Born In Fire!"
Za'ten "Drake born"
Found as an orphaned child Za'ten was discovered by Vulkan when it was brought to his ears of a boy with extraordinary physical prowess for his age. Upon meeting the boy Vulkan knew he would be a perfect candidate to receive his gene seed. Upon induction, Za'ten's following has ascended his deeds into myth hood. As a neophyte he obtained the name "Drake born" when a fellow inductee fell into a pit containing lava. The inductee had been knocked out but thankfully landed on a small piece of vanishing earth in the middle of the pit. Before anyone could think Za'ten sprinted into the pit. Wading through the lava to save his comrade. He grabbed him and tossed him up to safety. When he made it back his skin was untouched by the lava. His brothers gazed upon him as if he was reverberating their father Vulkan. As smoke and ash rose from his flesh his brothers nick named him Drake born as if he was sired by the fire drakes that roamed nocturne. From there he rose through the ranks until he was being considered for a position as praetor of a new company. To prove his metal he went on a hunt, un-armored, to find and kill a fire drakes worthy of presenting to Vulkan. And he did just that. The fire drake he killed was second only to the largest of Vulkan's kills. Vulkan named him praetor due to his fortitude and strength. Vulkan proclaimed him Master of the Hunt. Upon taking his position he placed a ritual in place. The company would be known as the Drake Born 8th company. All inductees would have to prove themselves to him as he did to Vulkan by hunting a fire drake to prove their worth.
Captain S'han "Master of Blades" Champion of the 8th
A more the exceptional swordsman, S'han has proven himself time and time again. Taken under Za'ten's wing at a young age the two are never seen apart. S'han stands as the company champion and is know by all as "Master of Blades" and to the 8th as "the Drake's Shadow" as he is Za'ten most trusted ally and leader of his honor guard "The Drake Sons". S'han obtained the title "Master of Blades" for becoming the victor of the Grand tournament held by Vulkan to prime his sons for the great crusade. Upon winning he was presented with his two swords "Foresight" and "Memory". Forged by Vulkan himself these exquisite blades are his most valued possessions. It is said that he had won the favor of Captain Gavieal Loken of the Sons of Horus, As they share the same sense of purpose and honor, S'han was crushed to learn the fate of his old friend, fueling his hatred even more.
The Drake Sons
Za'ten's personal honor guard, much like the sons of Horus of the Luna Wolves, these marines are sons.of Vulkan. They all share the perpetual gene as Za'ten and Vulkan though they do not exhibit as strong of an ability to regenerate. During battle they are described as fighting with "One Mind" as each man know what his comrade will do and can complement each move no matter what the others are doing, the best example of fighting as one. After the massacre on Isstvan V they never spoke a word again making their fighting even more impressive. They all disappeared one day, deep in an active volcano on nocturne to mourn their lost brothers. When they emerged they had constructed an new weapon, forged equally in hate and anguish. These weapons were known as the Drake Scale Gauntlets. They were built to tear through any man's armor, even terminator. The claws on the gauntlets glow.hotter the the volcanos on nocturne. Melting through armor with the greatest of ease and cauterizing the victim as they are torn in half, so they may live long enough to see their brothers slain as the Drake Sons did.
During the time spanning the great crusade the 8th company proved itself useful at dispensing all things xenos. They were especially proficient at dispatching large beasts due to their hunting background.
At the advent of the great crusade the 8th was sent to defend a human civilization on the planet Kaledor. The company was 200 strong against a massive opposition. They faced an orks infestation 2000 strong. Not only did they come out victorious but not one human life was lost from the settlement. Due to the strategic advantage that the settlement allowed the battle lasted 2 months, where it could have lasted 2 years. The settlement was a mining settlement and the honeycomb of tunnels developed by the settlers gave the 8th and advantage. They lured the orks forces into the tunnels and proceeded burn them to ashes. At the tail end of the battle the 8th resorted to close combat, which was said to resemble the swatting of flies.
During the massacre at Istvaan V, the Drake Born were one of the only companies of the salamanders to survive mostly intacted. Due to this it bred hatred of the Death Guard, Sons of Horus, Emperor's Children, and World Eaters Legions.
"They took our brothers from us. A deed as such cannot go unpunished. Until I draw my last breath I promise you, they will feel our flames, they will break under our hammers, their skulls will crush under our boots. For our fallen brothers! For Nocturne! For Vulkan! For the Emperor!"
