Description

Mag Tuireda is a grim world where hive spires thrust like jagged teeth out of cold fens and dark evergreen forests. Summers are short, while winters can be harsh with heavy snow falls. Growing seasons are generally meagre and the lords are sometimes obliged to import food during the worst winters just to keep their living peasantry from starving to death.
In spite of Mag Tuireda’s industrialized nature, much of the population lives in small towns and villages with startlingly low technology levels. These peasant communities are connected by lonely dirt cart-ways that wind over isolated mountain passes and beneath the forlorn trees. The nobility of Mag Tuireda live in spire castles and hive-burghs, as well as managing massive estates in the countryside. When not competing in Knightly tournaments, the scions spend their days hunting in the vast forests. They are led by House De’Havilland, whose Dukes pay feudal homage to the Queen of Umbra Major. The queen herself is said to be of De’Havilland blood, though such records are sequestered and perhaps only she knows the truth.
When a Tuiredan noble reaches the age of majority (16 for women and 18 for men) they are expected to take part in a traditional Dire Wolf hunt. The young noble takes up lance and energy shied, mounts a fast Tuiredan equid, and rides into the dark forest alone. Their quarry are the massive gray Dire wolves that prowl the tree-shadowed hills and valleys. Such beasts are formidable opponents for they are as large as an equid with vicious claws and snapping jaws full of razor sharp teeth, and they hunt in packs. The noble is not expected to return until they can do so wrapped in the fur of a Dire wolf they have slain on their hunt. This mantle becomes a part of their dress for formal state occasions, representing an honor that can never be taken away.

Mag Tuireda’s exports include rough-cut timber, leather and furs, and finished goods such as furniture, gun stocks, and custom Knight armors built in the Spires.

History

Local legends tell of how this planet was re-terraformed after having been subjected to virus bombing during the initial human colonization efforts. Though the purported cause for this Exterminatus order varies with the storyteller, all agree that it has made the entire planet a haunted place where the spirits of the dead encroach upon the abodes of the living. The peasant population lives in constant fear of vengeful ghosts and bars their doors at night against wandering specters, keening banshees, and Etherial Hunters.
