History

+++ Company origin +++

The 393rd company of the 5th Battalion, 423rd Compliance Fleet carries the moniker of the Rock Snakes. This esoteric title comes from the barbaric mining gangs of Cthonia where the sub-basement 9 Rock Snakes carved out a small empire in the bedrock of the mining world. The coming of the Primarch saw a great upheaval, only surpassed by the coming of the Emperor. With the compliance of Cthonia the value of the main commodity of the Rock Snakes; child soldiers became astronomically more valuable, and The Emperors flesh-smith gratefully utilised the bounty of thousands of young boys owned by the Snakes. Each child underwent cursory genetic screening before the implantation of XVI legion Zygotes harvested from the Primarch’s gene seed. Casualties due to rejection were lower than expected and the Rock Snakes became a fully-fledged company of over 2000 legionaries in a short time leading to a shortage of heavy equipment and a reliance of the new company on infantry carried weapons and infantry units, sparingly supported by heavier equipment, begged borrowed and stolen from other companies within the battalion. The strength of the genetics from the Rock Snakes gang-clan lead to them providing a steady stream of further recruits especially the hyper farmed Reavers long into the heresy proper, maintaining the manpower of the Rock Snakes until the siege of Terra.

+++ Praetor Tyberadon +++

"I was there, at the end.

I fought on the world that had cradled our race, where sky and earth touched, on the walls constructed from the bones of a false god’s hubris and conceit.

I watched as demi gods clawed and grappled, murdered and speared each other, under the red glow of volkite beams. I saw the fists of Dorn bleed and die, the angels of Sanguinius weeping tears of blood as they were cast from the heavens, the Khans barbarian hordes unhorsed by hails of bolter fire.

I saw my brothers die, in ignominy, uncelebrated by an empire we spent 300 years forging in blood and battle.

But mostly I remember hearing the laughter of the uncaring gods as we failed, Horus died, and the bitter taste of defeat like ash in my throat.”

- Praetor Tyberadon 393rd company, Rock Snakes, XVIth legion

Commanders of the Rock Snakes all came from the original 2000 recruits, through attrition and honour duels leadership was passed through many hands and the competition for spots ensured that leaders displaying competence, skill and ruthlessness rose to the top, just as they did in the gangs. Praetor Tyberadon was an exemplary recruit, ruthless, calculated and underhanded, many spoke in hushed tones that he should have joined the XXth legion. His first kill was at age 10, some no name ganger from a rival crew falling beneath his blade as he underestimated a child’s warrior spirit. By age 12 he lead a crew of his own numbering up to 70 child soldiers in the never ending twilight subterranean wars. Considered old at age 14, an outside chance of the gene-seed taking, Tyberadon suffered greatly as his body changed to accommodate the extra organs and bone and muscle growth required for a legionary, but he prevailed. Rising through the ranks slowly at first, it wasn’t until his acceptance to the Silver Moon Warrior Lodge that he attracted attention from the echelons who propelled him into the officer corps and true leadership. Istvaan was a test which he relished, removing those disloyal to his Primarch, and other marines from legions that got in his way was what he had been dreaming of; an equal opponent.
