History
Pre Compliance
Originally touted as one of the academic lights of the System Kingdoms, Styges I, was the central learning and research planet for Grotto, who was considered the most advanced culture within the pre Imperial collection of systems in the Sub-Sector. While not a comfortable planet on the surface, its proximity to the Systems sun forcing the habitation complexes underground, still leaving vast networks of research facilities above ground with heavy radiation and heat shielding.
When the Imperial emmisary first arrived in system with the message from the Emperor to rejoin the Imperium of man, Grotto immediately turned to the scholars of Styges I for their opinion on the matter, without hesitation the communique came back asserting that Grotto was far more advanced than the 'Imperium' and its false Emperor and, that by rebuffing the tyranical attempt, would unite the entire System Kingdoms behind them. While a number of the top tier Kingdoms did indeed follow suit, the vast majority ignored Grotto's resistance and sided with the Imperium.
The Xenos Masters
Confident that their rebuffal of the Imperial envoy would be the last they saw of the 'Imperium', Grotto was completely unprepared for the massive invasion force that translated in system, overwhelming Outpost Grotto in less than a day and advancing at a rapid pace. The nobles of Grotto immediately sent for advice from Styges I but only silence followed; even as the Legion drop ships broke through the orbital defenses of Grotto, the scholars of Styges I remained silent. It was when the Compliance forces made planetfall on Styges III that the true nature of the Grotto System was unveiled.
Initial reports from the advanced Legio scouts indicated not only armed human military units, but also supporting Xenos forces using far more advanced weaponary and limited stealth technology. Once the Xenos presence was confirmed, the Compliance of Grotto was all but abandoned and the all efforts shifted to the destruction of the alien presence on the three Styges worlds. It quickly became evident that rather than supporting the human populations, the Xenos inhabitants were actually in control of them, using them as cannon foder in their attempts to repell the invading forces. As soon as this tactic was proven to be futile, all three planets suddenly fell silent as the defending forces scattered deep beneath the planets surfaces into labyrthine catacombs rife with traps and ambuscades.
Post Compliance
Once the war shifted from an outright ground war to a gruelling guerrilla war, the Compliance force made a single short lived effort to purge the underground complexes closest to the surface and established defensive perimeters restricting entrance and exit of the catacombs. Leaving a small cadre of Imperial Army regiments in place along with an Imperial edict against Grotto to continue the purge of the three worlds, the Expeditionary fleet moved on, replaced by the occasional supply ship from Coreward systems to assist the shattered Kingdom in its rebirth as a subserviant Imperial vassal.
Being the least hospitable world of the system, Styges I, is the least priority of the three being purged, even still, after decades of protracted war. In fact there are even rumours that a resistance force has grown strong enough to overthrow a number of the 'secure' defense stations guarding the catacomb entrances and that the Imperial forces are at risk of losing their meagre foothold on the planet all together. Unwilling to incur the wrath of the Imperium twice, the Governor of Grotto has gone to great lengths to avoid reporting such matters and requesting assitance.
