Having been pushed back from Gore Gap, the defenders of Faroe hastily regrouped in an attempt to block Legio Revenantus' drive on Childriss Center. Though the defenders had suffered a serious blow, their sacrifice bought critical time, as Umbra was forced to clear the wreckage from Gore Gap before their super-heavy units could get through. The open rolling hills of the Pedemontium now lay between the invaders and the planetary capitol.

Princeps Seniores Maxim Merkuryev, commanding Invicta Maniple Helios, knew that his smaller numbers would be at a disadvantage fighting in such open terrain. He ordered his battlegroup to concentrate and conceal themselves within the grain silos and packing plants of the Marionville Agri-processing Center, where his strong force of Knights could be put to best use.

Marionville was located about half way along the main road leading from the valley to Childriss Center and was one of the few developed industrial areas in the Pedemontium region. The center had been partially damaged by orbital fire, but was still largely intact. Merkuryev sent House Vyronii Knights into the countryside to set up ambushes and attempt to lure the enemy into attacking Marionville. Once inside the processing center, he reasoned, his force of Scout Titans and Knights could out-maneuver the larger enemy engines. Whether by the success of this tactic or through the execution of their own battle plans, the Spearhead of Revenantus advanced on Marionville and the sage was set for another bloody engagement.
