Battle Summary

When the Outer Fortifications were breached and then captured by the Loyalists, Warsmith Krios Dracontites, commanding the forces loyal to the Warmaster on Ark'alask-Septimus, decided to embark on a major series of counter-strokes to regain the strategic initiative and blunt the inevitable enemy offensive against his primary lines defending the main approaches to the Ferrumskrag. One of his primary assaults was against a large force of World Eaters that had betrayed their Primarch and were fighting on the side of the Throne. Taking this as a particular affront, Dracontites personally led a major assault force containing significant elements of his 64th Grand Battalion to destroy XIIth Legion elements advancing through the major shipping yards to the east of the Ferrumskrag.

The Sredha Yards were a significant antebellum shipping complex, where munitions and matériel were transfered from the protected vaults of the Ferrumskrag to be organized and then loaded onto ships waiting in orbit. However, by this stage in the war, the yards were stripped bare by both Loyalist and Traitor forces and was not little more than a bombed-out ghost town of blasted buildings and twisted macro-cranes. The Loyalist command had hoped to advance through the rubble of the Sredha Yards on a wide flanking maneuver. Seeing the threat to his flank, Dracontites attacked the enemy spearhead.

The Iron Warriors detected the Loyalist advance units and set up an ambush among the ruins: Tyrant Siege Terminators covered the main approaches, Breachers took cover in a blown-out warehouse ready to counter-attack, Castellax Battle Automata stalked forward, and IVth Legion Veterans were sent on a flanking march to attack the World Eaters' rear. When the Loyalists noticed the Iron Warriors' presence, the Butcher's Nails sang and sent them into a frenzy. They charged headlong into the IVth Legion's guns, taking heavy casualties but continuing regardless.

They hit Dracontites' lines with incredible fury, destroying the Iron Warriors' Castellax in a hail of plasma fire and chainaxes. The IVth Legion Breachers, led by the Warsmith, immediately counter-attacked and cut down a score of World Eaters, but were eventually forced back by the utter violence of the former sons of Angron. Thankfully for the IVth Legion the flanking Veterans arrived and began to unleash a murderous crossfire on the World Eaters, but unfortunately the Iron Warriors were too severely mauled to push their advantage and complete the encirclement and destruction of the Loyalists, who managed to withdraw to the east.

The First Battle of the Sredha Yards was tactically inconclusive. Although the Traitors had succeeded in checking the Loyalist spearhead and delay their flanking attack, the World Eaters had not been completely destroyed and soon were able to continue their advance. Dracontites' forces were also unable to continue their counter-attack as by then the Loyalists had begun a full-scale offensive against the primary defence line around the Ferrumskrag and the 64th Grand Battalion was urgently needed on the walls.
