Battle Summary

Prologue.

Following the death of Ferrus Manus on the black sands of the Urgall Depression, information and whispers of the Geigenhive on Trugoy first got back to Warmaster's ears. Despite the Mechanicum's best efforts at an information embargo on the archeotech level hive, traitor operatives became aware of the existence of the Stasis Vaults deep within the Primary Arcology. Ferrus Manus himself had sequestered weapons of mass destruction and ill intent in these vaults, and news of it however vague piqued the Warmaster's interest. Throwing the challenge to his extensive strategic and logistical staff, he queried the possibility of a lightning strike upon Trugoy. The numbers run over and over, the sacrifices inspected and reinspected, promising omens were reported to Horus, with a caveat; The Warmaster's fleet could penetrate the Trugoy defences, however they could only deploy forces to the surface for three days. After this the Loyalist response would make lingering without significant fleet loss untenable.

In a war council with several of his brothers and the Mournival, plans were drawn. It called for the encirclement and pronouncement of a brutal ground attack, causing as much chaos and massacre as possible, drawing defenders from the Hive itself into the surrounding domes, to reduce the response time of units to the Primary Arcology which would be the focus of infiltration by aerial deployment and teleportation. The Gods willing, the council estimated the Stasis Vaults' contents would be in the Warmaster's hands two days into the conflict.

The Siege Day 1

Merely hours after the traitor fleet arrived in Trugoy orbit, the bombardment started. As smaller ships chased away station monitors and hounded the fleeing high-anchor garrison to out-system, heavier Astartes barges and battleships began a savage and unrelenting fusillade. The primary arcology of the Geigenhive was equipped with powerful orbit-ward energy fields, capable of surviving even the most prolonged bombardment, however the traitor's goal was the shut down of all transit in and out of the hive. Titanic energy blasts pulverised domes and shattered transit tubes and open road-tops like plaster hit with a hammer.

As the bombardment rained down as close to the hive as possible, the traitors deployed vast armoured forces and walkers onto the surface, these units organised and began a ruthless push.

Simultaneously to news of the ground assault arriving, the Primary Arcology began to rock with internal explosions and gunfire. Astartes of the Alpha Legion, Sons of Horus, Night Lords, and other unidentified factions were reported at large inside the hive. Supreme Command for the Hive defence fell silent and it wasn't until early on day 2 that the death of the entire command staff at the hands of Sons of Horus Seekers was confirmed. The Traitors had the upper hand, they had decapitated the defence structure and sewn havoc through the entire hive. The Hive was immense however, and they had only evened the scales, not tipped them.

All day, field batteries amongst the domes hammered the mid arcology the ground level shields managed to hold, large armoured forces entering the Loyalist cordon were ambushed and routed, and the hive held strong.

Just before midnight on the first day of the siege, infiltrators within the hive struck, and the shields went down..

The Siege Day 2

Seizing on the downed shields, and aiming to force a tipping point, the Warmaster himself deployed to battle, aiming to open further a weak point in the loyalist lines. He took direct control of Jean Parisot de Jabette's 103rd Storm Legion Autokrator and teleported in to battle to spear head their assault on a major entrance gate to the Arcology, 'Blast Shutter 85', in a dome thick with an invasive xenos flora known as flubbtrees. Sworn to hold this gate was the Deite 173rd, a Rogue Trader force, veterans of war in the Ghoul Stars. Kissing his blade, their master Edame Lefleuff watched as Shutter 85 slowly ground shut, only 7 meters out the doors suddenly stopped and through it stepped a single knight, Teutoberg. Hailing Edame as a friend, the storied knight took his place in the battle line as the Blast Shutter 85 closed for the last time.

The battle was fiercely intense, the 173rd coming under bombardments so vicious unaugmented humans would not have been able to survive. The crux of the battle and a major tipping point in the entire campaign occurred however when Teutoberg stormed through several flubbtree thickets and engaged the Warmaster and his coterie at close quarters. Slicing the Emperor's Son across the chest with the impossible energy beam of the Atrapos Lascutter and then blowing him away through the fleshy woods like a pinball with its graviton implosion cannon.

The fall of the Warmaster was quickly disseminated amongst the Traitor forces. Although Horus was later rushed from the surface back to the Vengeful Spirit, the blow was mighty.

Meanwhile, in the Mid-Arcology Loyalists Engineers under the protection of Astartes kill-teams managed to re-establish shield coverage and the indiscriminate shelling ceased. The Loyalists had recovered, downed the Warmaster and turned the shields back on. For maybe a few hours the Loyalists had reason to feel hopeful.

All hope was sucked away again when the traitors renewed their assault. At blast shutter 33, heavy crawlers carrying a terminator cadre easily swept aside opposition, cut the gate down like cordwood and made for an internal dome known to contain an ancient non-human and non-active portal. Tyleradon Boras of the Sons of Horus was on a vengeance mission, Horus’s wounding caused the traitors to lose strategic focus, and many units of Sons of Horus on the ground began blood reprisals against civilians regardless of tactical importance. Boras was a hardliner, fanatical to Horus, and he brought with him Chiades, an escaped Alpha Psyker who had made his way into his coterie earlier in the assault. Chiades was a harbinger of dark fates, and when Horus was reported down he was able to encyst his dark plan in the heart of Boras’ household. It isn’t clear what went on once Boras entered the restricted portal dome, however it is known that Ultramarines who set up to protect it suffered from some kind of treacherous leadership break down, enabling Boras to unleash fell energies which resulted in not only the gate becoming active, but overcharging it with slaughter and causing it to develop into an increasingly dangerous and unstable warp rift. As the last Ultramarine defenders collapsed, daemons and warp sprites began to step and seep forth into the material plane.

Around the stasis vaults, enemy action had spilled into a Legio Cybernetica proving ground facility and the battle had unleashed increasing levels of radiation throughout several levels of the hive, this would prove to be both a curse to all living things in the hive, and a saving grace for the Loyalist war effort at large.

Ecdurus Irrumator. Siege Dominus of the Imperial fists held the last loyalist position outside of the hive itself. Blast Shutter 108 had been held against assault after assault, Irrumator’s heavy firepower slaying many superheavies, and entire World Eater and Blackshield strike forces... As the clock approached midnight on day 2 of the siege, Irrumator finally gave the command to fall back, and defend the inner hive. Blast Shutter 108 rolled shut and an enormous lifting unit pushed up against it. The Traitors had penetrated the hive at numerous other points however, and units were pouring through in some areas.

The Siege Day 3

At first light on day three of the siege, a coven of psykers at the command of Ahhāk of the Thousand Sons, began a ceremony… Enormous amounts of warp energy sucked into an enormous vortex which wheeled around under control of the coven. They directed this vortex towards the Legio Cybernetica Castellax Factory and unleashed it. Giant blast shutters on the outside of the hive were opened at this exact time, and the radioactive gasses flowed down the hive like a pyroclastic flow. They blasted out through the shattered hives, slaying all flesh they touched. The wave continued out into the wastes, and for hundreds of kilometers, everything died.

This cleared the radioactive build up however, saving the entire hive from a swift death. As a side effect, it also gave the Traitors one more chance to break through into the Stasis Vaults. One more time kill teams entered the irradiated and automata haunted Castellax Factory, hoping to break through into the vaults.

Daemons screamed through the hive, and psychic backlash, rogue tulpas, warp gheist were frequent. It’s been said that any human asleep at the time the warp rift was breached were slain in their slumber and lurched to their feet as dancing cadavers. Ahhāk stood at the direct center of the hive and drew three cards from a scintillating deck. He calmly placed them face up in front of him. He blinked, once. Then stood and called his coterie. Led via occulted means to the warp gate, the Fourth Fellowship went to war. They walked upon the gateway, a howling gyre at the center of the now blasted gate dome. The ground itself was ash and coals, as daemonic entities, obscured by heat shimmer howled and cursed in their devil tongue. Ahhāk kept marching and his men opened fire, mass reactive shells shredding endless daemonic forms. Their numbers were endless. Heavy volkite weaponry disintegrated entire hoards of the devils at a time but for every one that fell more poured forth. Slowly through force of will, Ahhāk forced the portal back, the tide of daemons slowed, giving them vital meters of gained territory. Slowly but surely they pushed forward until Ahhāk approached the portal. As he did, Sam Neil stepped forth. An Ultramarines bonded Navigator, he had experienced premonitions leading up to this day but not beyond, and when the force at the portal had fought to their last, Sam Neil plunged himself through the gate. Now in this howling daemon infested dome at the core of an irradiated hive, Ahhāk conversed with him. What passed between them is not known, but at the conclusion Ahhāk banished Sam Neil to the warp and with a touch closed the portal. The Geigenhive was healed of its most cankerous life threatening wound. At the conclusion of the war on Trugoy Ahhāk was summoned to be rewarded for his actions on that day, of him however the Loyalists never found a trace.

As the third day came to a close, the mid Arcology came under relentless assault. Traitors such as Skanderbeg, Acrus Cain, The bloody headsman Desco Tel or the Red Jackal ran wild on the slaughter. Avoiding these reavers Ychne Ghrem came. In a captured Triaros conveyor they made their way to the Cybernetica factory and didn’t slow down. They ploughed the vehicle deep into the plant, prepping powerful demolition charges as they clambered out. Grem’s unit had entered the battle on the side of the Traitors, trying to enter the hive before them, they were sundered and their force broken by Irrumator’s forces. Grem had realised by this time that the Stasis Vaults couldn’t possibly fall into Horus’ hands, and into the Geigenhive they went, demolishing key reactor infrastructure causing an enormous radiological occurrence. Pure death clouded out through the Mid-Arcology. Automatic blast containment protocols were enacted. The entire mid Arcology was so heavily irradiated there was no chance of retrieval or salvage of the Stasis vaults this day.

Aftermath

Mobile loyalist forces began to evacuate the Geigenhive. Escape via ground was easy. The toxic rad cloud which surrounded the hive fogged all auspex and fear of pursuit, and some loyalist forces stationed up-hive or able to access the upper levels via still working bulk lifters, escaped from the star ports there.

The Geigenhive was left to the traitors. The work of Grem had meant it would be years before clean-up was underway to access the stasis vaults, and the traitors might not find the effort tenable. News began to circulate amongst the traitors that the hive had fallen, the Loyalists were defeated, and the greatest miracle, Horus had been saved by his fell gods. The Warmaster himself gave a speech a day later which was repeated across the pict screens of the occupying forces on Trugoy as well as aboard the Traitor fleet. He congratulated the traitors upon their stunning victory, claiming that the Loyalists would feel shame for this defeat for years to come. Of the attempt on the Stasis Vaults he said nothing, and the next day new fleet organisation and warp translation orders were beamed out and the fleet began to move off to new objectives. The Traitors had destroyed a key cog in the loyalist war effort, but been denied use of the weapons themselves.
