While there were scenes of horrific war across the surface of the planet, large tracts of wilderness and scenery remained bascially untouched, preserving the planets idealic and serene 'postcard' vistas. The governments rapid capitulation once the war actually started largely preserved the planets paradise world status, had prolonged war visited Grotto, then it would have been transformed into the hellish landscpaes similar to the Styges worlds.
Population
At the height of their power, the Kingdom of Grotto boasted close to five Billion souls scattered across its primary world, even more visitors and tourists from neighbouring Kingdom systems. With the coming of the Imperium and the violent Compliance the population now hovers just over one and a half billion after a mass exodus shortly after the execution of every second person on the world.
History
For millenia the Grotto System languished at the middle ranks of the System Kingdoms, its primary world a paradise but the entire system having little else of benefit or worth. A little over 700 hundred years before Compliance this changed with the sudden emmergance of a great centre of learning on the systems inner most world, Styges I. The Systems technology began to advance and within decades the government had undergone a overhaul, introducing new laws and programs of industry; mining operations commenced on Styges II, large scale experiments were started on Styges III and exploration of the gas giants for valuable resources. In addition a campaign of conscription and training was based on Styges II, training regiments of troops for local System defense and mercantile activities used to expand Grotto's sphere of influence with the other neighbouring System Kingdoms.
Within two centuries the System had risen from murky existance to one of the top tier System Kingdoms, exporting minerals from their mining operations, offering waster disposal for toxic materials, the commissioning of expensive scietific research teams and project facilities and of course the original attraction of a paradise world, now serviced by hundreds of thousands of well trained slaves. While all of this produced enormous amounts of influence and income for the system, only a small portion of this was reflected in the Systems economy and core worlds; instead of raising huge swathes of people to higher classes of wealth, there was very little movement, even in the higher nobility; very little expensive infrastructure improvements took place apart from those which would produce additional venue. Instead some inquisitive nobles found that the vast majority of the resources were being diverted to the inner triplet worlds of Styges I, II & III, for unknown reasons and purposes. Such Nobles found themselves quickly disgraced, executed and their famalies exiled.
