After a long drawn out series of attacks the battle seemed to be going in favour of the loyalists, however at the eleventh hour a strike force from the Alpha Legion, who were believed to be loyalist, stole vital information and showed their true colours, switching to the the traitors side and handing them all the ground and resources they had captured, this swayed the battle and resulted in a minor victory for the Traitors.

Scholars from the Thousand Sons, who had been studying the Archeotech that was horded from the initial battle, uncovered the location of several Relics on both Hyperborea Prime and Secondus.
 +
Using the ongoing skirmishes as cover a small strike force of Sons of Horus attempted to capture one of the relics, but it was lost to Custodes, unbeknownst to its powers.

5th Company Captain Kaltrax and his World Eaters were hunting down civilians in the Hyperborean jungles to add to his collection. He learned of their existence after the failed assault of Imperial Fist 31st Captain Gottfried and his Templar Brethren. A captured Imperial Fist officer from the battle was interrogated until the whereabouts of the civilians were extracted. With this newly acquired knowledge, Kaltrax quickly marshalled his band of vicious enslavers and sped off to the coordinates.
+
Unhappy with this loss, the Thousand Sons managed to capture a second relic from Loyalist hands and activated it.
 +
It was soon discovered that this relic was created in ages past and was used to absorb warp energy, converting it into a power source for the planets long lost civilisation. Once activated, many of the decrepit installations and defence systems began  to reawaken from their centuries long slumber, however it also  resulted in a build up of warp energy and  due to the the ancient, worn out  infrastructure mutations and other, darker, goings on began to become more frequent in the months after the battle.

Kaltrax was as brutal and savage as any World Eater Captain in the legion. He was best known for taking prisoners on any planet he campaigned, earning him that nickname “The Enslaver”. His entourage was as equally well known, considered to be one of the most ruthless in the galaxy. The personal retinue of Kaltrax consisted of ten blood crazed Butchers, which he thankfully had dominance over due to possessing the controls to their terminator suits. These monsters were dragged by chains and pulled by World Eater Astartes. At the front of the pack was a Leviathan Siege Dreadnought who guided the battle force through the dense jungle. This towering siege equipment was once a noble warrior of the World Eaters, but has since lost his name, and is now only know as “The Eater”.
+
With this discovery commanders from both sides of the civil war have realised the significance of taking and holding Hyperborea and the entire Adlayd System and reinforcements have been dispatched to both Hyperborea Prime and Hyperborea Secundus.
A few days passed as the hunt continued for the civilians. One of Kaltrax’s minions discovered tracks and informed the ruthless captain. This discovery led them to the ruins of a landing craft where their unware targets sought refuge. The World Eater warband slowly encircled their victims, scanning the surrounding area for any traps or signs of hidden forces. Just as the warband started to advance on their prey, Kaltrax noticed in the corner of his eye a small glint of golden armour and a rustle along the tree line. It was the Emperors lap dogs, the golden Custodes. They had been sent to recover the very same civilians that Kaltrax had been hunting. Furious at the site of loyalist scum, Kaltrax motioned for his warband of blood thirsty Astartes to charge at the enemy. The Custodes were well aware of the World Eater presence before the charge order was made, and plans were already in motion to extract the civilians to safety. However, the oncoming ravenous horde expedited the plans and a small contingent of Custodes formed a shield wall while the civilians made their escape. Witnessing the Custodes form a Testudo, Kaltrax unleashed his maddened Butchers upon the enemy. The shield wall offered pathetic resistance as the Red Butchers crashed into the enemy’s defensive line, brushing aside the Emperors champions.
+

Amidst the slaughter a bright light shone onto the battlefield, blinding the World Eater onslaught only for a moment. As the light dissipated, a towering golden figure stood amongst his fallen brothers. It was Shield Captain Oppius and his honour guard, brimming with confidence as they stood only a few feet away from Kaltrax and his Astartes. Against any other foe, the sheer presence of the shield captain would strike fear into the hearts of their opponent. However, at the sight of a powerful enemy, the blood madness took hold of the Red Butcher entourage, charging without hesitation. As both retinues fought one another, the two officers exchanged blows. The two swung at each other over and over, each champion hitting one another’s shield, neither warrior gaining ground. While the shield captain was preoccupied two Red Butchers leapt at Oppius which he quickly dispatched with his Paragon Spear. Fighting both Kaltrax and wayward Red Butchers was taxing on Oppius, but to his credit he held his ground.

Suddenly on the east flank, the hulking monster known as “the Eater” began its rampage, crushing Custodes between its claws. Simultaneously a mass of World Eater bolters rained down on their embattled enemy, creating an opening for Kaltrax and his Butchers to gain some ground. The Emperors lap dogs were surrounded, and their destiny sealed. Realising there was no chance at escape, the Custodes and their Shield Captain fought desperately to take as many World Eaters with them before their inevitable fate. Oppius launched countless attacks towards Kaltrax, each blocked by his shield.

The World Eater onslaught slayed the Custodes one by one, and at the sight of his fallen brethren in a rare moment, Oppius was distracted. Kaltrax, using this as an opportune moment, impaled the shield captain on the tip of his trident. He lifted the shield captain into the air before casting him down to a bloody fate at the hands of the crazed Butchers. The World Eaters maddened by bloodlust, brought down the remaining Custodes that were trying to assist the civilians escaping. The civilians scared at the sight of the blood soaked mad men ran in all directions. One Imperial Nobleman was unluckily captured and thrown against the space craft wreckage, knocking him out cold. While the remaining civilians either escaped or quenched the Butchers thirst for blood.

+
As Kaltrax ordered the surviving Nobleman bound and gagged, he noticed that the civilians had uncovered a comms relay. Kaltrax investigated the relay, discovering it was fully operational and would prove useful for the Traitor legions. However, this discovery was only secondary, as the brutal captains main prize was already acquired, the unfortunate Nobleman who had no idea what would be in store for him.

History

Pre Imperium

Little is known Of Hyperborea Prime's ancient history other than it was the capital planet of a long extinct advanced human civilisation.

Re-Discovery

During the long and somewhat dragged out negotiations with the Baylonian Conclave in the Oteal System, a splinter force from the 597th expedition fleet was sent to explore the small Adlayd sytem. Upon initial scans the planet Hyperborea Prime was believed to contain both plentiful natural resources and what seemed to be ruins of a past civilisation. Before units could be deployed to the surface the splinter fleet was recalled to the Oteal system in preparation for the oncoming war following the Vilnor incident.

Mechanicum forces sent to the Oteal system from Terra to take over the compliance action soon negotiated peace and discovered that in ages past the Conclave had built a research station in the Wootoona Chain. They also discovered that from this station the Conclave had sent landing parties to Hyperborea Prime and found that the long dead civilisation had once been of a high level of technological advancement. For unknown reasons the Conclave had retreated from the system before any Archeotech or STC fragments could be discovered and now they treated the system as if it were cursed.

With the intention of recovering any lost technological secrets the Mechanicum fleet set off for the Hyperborea, however the system was ravaged by warp storms of unprecedented size and was impossible to travel to and was lost and forgotten.

Horus Heresy

Now as the civil war rages, rumours are spreading throughout the Centrumeh Sub-System that the warp storms have dissipated and that the lost technological wonders of Hyperborea Prime are up for the taking. The Synod of the neighbouring Oteal system have also offered a reward for any lost STC Fragments or Archeotech that is retrieved, causing a small influx of civilians from Centrumeh Gate and other surrounding systems wanting to strike it rich or find the archeotech or ancient artefacts for themselves.

This could all be a ploy by the Synod or one of the other systems governors in an attempt to create interest and draw the war into the distant and uninhabited system.

Upon seeing civilians risking the dangerous voyage to Hyperborea and the reward offered by the Synod, Traitor and Loyalist legions have both sent forces to take the Adlayd system and control its resources and any lost technology that could aid in the ongoing civil war and to stop it from ending up in the wrong hands.

The Battle For Hyperborea

Honour Badge

Full battle summary

The Initial campaign in what later became known as “The battle for Hyperborea” was a long and brutal war that drew in many legions from nearby sectors. The battle to seize a foothold on the planet ended in a minor Traitor victory, however where the true victory was won was the vital Archeotech captured by the Traitor forces of the Thousand sons. This archeotech was decided to be of importance, but not of such grandeur that it could sway the outcome of the ongoing civil war. Because of this both loyalist and traitor factions decided to send reinforcements originally destined to The Adlayd System to other theatres of the war deemed more vital.

Hearing that the initial battle had all but ceased, many more civilian, private military, knight houses and even criminal organisations decided that Hyperborea could be the place try to strike it rich. Whether they enlisted their military services for money, tried to find or steal any remaining archeotech or simply wanted to disappear, people flocked to Hyperborea in their thousands. Ramshackle villages or outposts were set up around the shattered remains of the ancient city.
